Wrist Pain ?'s(3 posts)

Wrist Pain ?'sEuthymic

After an extended (2 year) hiatus, I recently got out my mountain bike and began riding again. Although I have been riding primarily on the road, I find that I am having a significant amount of post ride wrist soreness/stiffness.

I'm a fairly big guy (6'5, 250lbs) that has seen better days of fitness but I don't recall as much wrist pain in the past (I used to ride quite a few centuries). One difference is my current gear. I had a cannondale delta V hardtail from the first year they made it (largest size at the time, circa 1991?) that was replaced under warranty with a 1999 F700 framset/fork (size Jumbo). It seems like the front triangle on this frame may be a bit longer so I wonder if this is effecting my weight transfer. Would people suggest a new, shorter stem/riser bars to potentially help this situation? I would certainly try risers but need a new stem as my old stem's clamp is too wide to allow riser bars to fit. Unfortunately, I'm having some trouble finding inexpensive aftermarket cannondale stems, especially those that have as much rise as this old stem. Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again.

When you ride make sure that your wrists are strait and not bent, you want a strait line from the bars to your wrists to your forearms. This can cause wrist pain, usually begginers do this more than vets, so this may not apply.

if that doesn't help, do what you are thinking (riser bars or stem w/ more rise)

good luck

I was having the same problem... I am a big guy as well and was having serious wrist pain on my new bike. I tried a new stem.. helped just a little...Then I was riding one day and noticed that my shoulders were wider than the handlebars, this caused me to grip the very end of the bars, my hands at a slight angle over the end, just barely. I bought some wider bars and haven't had wrist pain since.
