Sep 4, 2002 6:10 AM | | Everything at Lutsen has some decent elevation change, but most of the trails are more XC than DH. I've ridden an XC bike every time I've gone up there, and there are only a couple of trails where I wished for more travel or a beefier bike.
Anyway, the best trail up there, IMHO, is the black trail on Moose Mountain. Nice and fast, all downhill, with some longish sections of babyhead rocks and a cool overlook at the switchback. The two black trails on Mystery, as far as I can remember, are just black because they're fast and steep, but not very technical. Mostly fireroad-ish, with some small jumps. I don't think I've ridden the black trail on Eagle, but it looks steep from the parking lot.
I don't know what kind of bike you're planning on bringing, but you can really only use a full on DH bike on a few trails at Lutsen without it being total overkill. Even the XC trails are a lot of fun, though. One of my favorites is the blue trail from the top of Mystery that goes off the map over to Ullr.

(Yeah it's a chairlift area, but a couple of the longer trails that cross over to the other mountains do have a little bit of climbing and some flat sections.) It'll be overkill on some of the trails, but you'll love it on others. |
