| Theft Protection: How to lock Allen Bolts? | Spectre Sep 4, 2002 8:30 AM | | I remember a post discussing how to secure allen bolts so theives can't strip a bike easily. Do you replace Allen Bolts with Torx bolts? Also, how well does filling bolt holes with silicone work? It seems like it wouldn't take long for a thief to strip out the silicone.
Thanks. |
| Nothing is theft proof | shiggy Sep 4, 2002 8:43 AM | | But putting Shoe Goo or the like in the allen head will slow them down or they may just pick an easier target.
Torx bolts are little better than Allen heads these days. I can buy a full set of folding Torx wrenches at my LHS (local hardware store.) |
| if you need to leave your bike somewhere locked, it should... | clary. Sep 4, 2002 8:58 AM | | be a beater bike. Your good bike should be used from house to trail to house under your body at all times. That is the best insurance from theft.
beater bike: something not worth stealing.

| Silicone will slow you down too. | tlg Sep 4, 2002 10:01 AM | | Do you really want to go through that hastle of digging out silicone any time you need to replace or adjust something?
There are tamper resistant torx and hex screws available.

| build up a towner, don't lock up your good bike | club Sep 5, 2002 5:21 AM | | build up an ugly towner with bolt-on hubs, and parts that aren't attractive to thieves, and use that when you're running errands. if you're talking about locking a good bike outside, longterm, well good luck to ya, sooner or later it will be gone. |
