Titus Switchblade - weight questions(9 posts)

Titus Switchblade - weight questionsThe Weasel

Usually I am not a weight weenie, but I am looking into the SB (I'm liking the idea of a trail bike more and more). What would be an average/good weight for an SB with and air fork, decent wheels, and and XT get up? Uses would be mostly cross country with occasional rougher conditions, some 24 hour races, and very little if any freeriding (jumps of 3 feet no problem). Thanks.

About 27 lbs is a reasonable weight estimate w/o disc brakes. XT hubs are a little heavy so you could save some weight there

6.4 lbs out of the box with the brake bosses, derailleur hanger, and stickers. I had it built up really light when I first built it up because the parts came off my Superlight. It was about 24.5 lbs with Noleen MegaAir fork (3.1 lbs), full XTR 8 speed drivetrain, Speedplay Frogs, Thomson stem and post, Avid Ultimates and Arch Supremes, King Valiant wheels and headset, Explorer tires. I sold the SB at the begining of the year to get a Hammerhead 100X. It fits me better and is more appropriate for my riding.

Did you use the Hammerhead at Allamuchy? That's the kind of rougher conditions I'k talking about-Jersey and Westchester,NY. If so, how did it handle? I'm still a good year out from getting another FS, (it's never too early to dream) but another bike I've considered was the Racer-X, which I beleive can now be set up with 100mm upfront.
Thanks again.

The Hammerhead 100X is a Titus Racer-X with custom geometry for a 100mm fork and a slightly higher bb. It's also beefed up a bit with a straight gauge downtube, extra gussets, and boxed chainstays.

I thought the bike was perfect. I have the 100X setup with Float 100R, 2.25 Schwalbe Big Jim tires, Avid front disc, Egg Beaters. All of which seemed to be just right for the race and most of my rides. For XC races, I just put on some 2.1-2.0 tires and I'm ready to rip. The bike climbs like a goat and can still bomb the downhills. The HH is much better in the tight singletrack through the trees like we have around here in NC. The Allamuchy course was wider than most of our trails around here but it still required quick handling to pick the good line. I saw two other Hammerheads up at Allamuchy as well.

I would make sure of the fit before deciding on any bike. I'm right at 6 ft normal proportions. The Medium SB had a 23" TT which was a bit short so I had to use a Thomson layback post. It was okay but not ideal. The 23.5" HH fits me perfectly and makes all the difference in the feel of the bike.

Overall, I think the SB would be great up there as long as it fits and you don't mind the relaxed handling.
Nice bike and thanks for the info. The Weasel

I'm getting new bike fever. Is it wrong to want a new bike after only two years, even if you love it?
I have a med. frame available...total spam

Brand new, free shipping, no tax, of course. It is electric blue, we estimated it's weight at around six, which is quite good, considering the capabilities of the bike. if interested, e-mail tobybiker@hotmail.com Sorry for the spam, but hey, ya know...

...and that's with Hayes hydros, Marz 100 air fork, Fox Float RC rear, XTR f/r, Rolf Dolomites, RF cranks, Heavy Shimano 5-something series pedals, Thomson post/stem, Bontrager Race Modified bar, old (Al) bar ends, and a WTB Laser/Stealth saddle...

Ti bolt kit, Float fork, AM classic disc hubs, Velocity VXC rims, Stan's tubeless, XTR shifters and derailleurs, Hope mini's, RF cranks, AM classic BB, Thomson post and stem, Ti skewers, WTB saddle and pedals.
The black anodized frames must be heavier.
Without discs your XT build will probably be around 28-29lbs. Mine started at almost 30lbs with Avid discs, heavy pedals, Vanilla fork, XT drivetrain, etc.
