choosing a wheelset, 517 or sun ryno lite (8 posts)
| choosing a wheelset, 517 or sun ryno lite | zac Sep 4, 2002 10:49 AM | | I weigh about 190lb and ride XC pretty hard. I was wondering if a set of Mavic 517's would be OK. I am also considering Sun Ryno Lites. I would rather go with the 517's because of the weight but not if I will be truing and replacing spokes all of the time. I am also open to other suggestions. |
| Mavic 519 | pigboy Sep 4, 2002 1:02 PM | | I went from rhyno lites to 519s and really like them. They are very similar to the 517 but a little wider, a little thicker side wall and about 50 grams heavier. I think that the rhyno lites are a very rugged rim but maybe overkill if you are worried about weight. |

| re: choosing a wheelset, 517 or sun ryno lite | jksu Sep 4, 2002 5:54 PM | | if you want to just put on wheels and forget about'em, get teh rhynolites. they're heavier but they'll stay true through no matter what you throw at them. i trashed a set of 211 that was stock on my stumpjumper. i'm between 175-185lbs and ride pretty hard, crash ofteen, etc. xc. i don't do huge jumps, but i go fast and come up on stuff unexpectedly on occassion. i replaced the 211 rear with mavic 519 because they seemed like a good combo between stronger and light, but tacoed it recently after a bad crash. they'd probably be fine for most uses and if i hadn't crashed they probably would've lasted a while.... definitely fine for front. in fact, a 517 front would be fine too. but for rear, the rhynolites are cheaper and will last forever. at 190lbs you're close to clydesdale status and even if you only do cross country, a strong rear wheel will put your mind at ease. at least i think so. i have a set of rhynolites on my city/commuter bike and after dozens of curbs/ potholes in boston, they've never gone out of true. john |

| Don't use the X517 for the rear... | scrawnz Sep 5, 2002 6:35 AM | | I'm also around 190lbs and don't really regard myself as an aggressive rider but I do ride 3 times a week over all kinds of terrain and I went through 2 X517 rear wheels in a short period of time. They are known to get spider cracks around the nipple holes. I went with a X618 for the rear and kept a X517 on the front. However, I keep these as backup wheels since I now use Mavic Crossmax. |
| sun ryno lite | EricTheRed Sep 5, 2002 10:07 AM | | Are my weapon of choice, I used 517 for one summer but they got beat to hell, dings, hops, dents and needed truing every 2 weeks or so, now i use Ryno Lites, on everything from xc, to chairlift access to commuting. I like running a lower tire pressure and the rynos will take the hits. Another nice thing about the rynos is that they are cheep, i think Jenson has them for $35 right now, its pretty easy to build a cheap wheel with them. -e |
