| Truck bike rack | LocoJoe Oct 3, 2002 8:32 AM | | A friend made this rack for my Tacoma 4dr. It uses j-bolts through the redwood 4x4 to attach to the tie-down brackets of the truck. The fork and wheel mounts are from an old roof rack. |

| re: Truck bike rack | LocoJoe Oct 3, 2002 2:15 PM | | 2 holes are drilled through the 4x4 where they line up with the tie-downs. The j-bolts are hooked onto the tie-downs and inserted through the holes of the 4x4 from behind. A washer and nut is attached to the j-bolt on the front. The hole is recessed for the washer and nut.
The angles for the fork mounts were cut to lower the height of the bikes a little.
This was kind of a spur of the moment deal. It could probably be improved on. I'm already thinking of moving the wheel mounts on top of the 4x4 to save bed space. |

I'm about to buy a new 4 door Tacoma. Will you please email some larger or more detailed pics of the bike rack to me? Thanks!
Also...how does the 4 door tacoma perform as a moutainbike and road trip vehicle? I can't wait!
Thanks again...Mike

| LocoJoe... | Bill D Oct 3, 2002 6:00 PM | | I've had a Tacoma 4 door for 15 months now. I have 49K on it already. Red, just like the one pictured above, but I have a cap on the back, so I have the bike rack on the roof of the cab. Yakama rack, with Steelhead mounts. I had to go with longer rails than suggested, I think I went 4" longer. I have the Steelheads mounted on the outside of the towers. This makes loading and unloading a breeze at 5'8" tall. If your any shorter, and you don't have a step side you will be reaching from your tiptoes.
This rack set up looks pretty sharp on the 4 door, but you HAVE to get the shield, or whatever they call it. Without it, at 40 mph the whistling starts and continues to get WAY too loud.
Ill try to find a picture to scan, and Ill post it. |

| LocoJoe... | LocoJoe Oct 4, 2002 8:04 AM | | I wondered if they made a topper(cap) for that small of a bed. Previously we hauled the bikes on an old roof rack that I sat in the bed. Worked ok I just wanted something that I could leave on the truck without taking up much room. Best part was this new rack was free made with materials I scrounged up. With the old set up the bikes sat lower and were shielded by the cab. Now I'm wondering if I'll have wind noise since they sit higher. We've had our truck a month and put 4500 miles on it. 3300 just on one biking trip. |
