Anyone send XT cranks back to Shimano due to creaks?(5 posts)

Anyone send XT cranks back to Shimano due to creaks?MotoRoost

I've owned XT splined cranks for 3 months and that damn crreak sound will not go away. I've teflon'd my BB cups, taken the cranks off and cleaned them, cleaned BB spindle interface area. Put lube on both, tightend the bolts changed pedals, teflon taped pedals....everything!
BUT THAT CREAK WILL NOT GO AWAY!!@@!! It only happens when the cranks are in the parallel to ground position. Anytime weight is shifted down or even going over bumps, that creak is heard. I'm pretty positive it's the cranks because to test, what I do is: right foot forward, cranks parallel to ground, step down and hear creak...Do it again and don't hear creak. THEN i'll shift to left foot forward, cranks parallel, step down and hear creak, step again, no creak. It's gotta be the cranks.

SO, my question is, has anyone sent their cranks back to Shimano in hopes of having them send a new crank, under warranty? Any luck. I really need to know before I do such a thing because being crankless for a week or two would really suck!
No, but here's what I did to cure the problem...Squash

First have the bb housing faced. That's a proccess where a cutting jig is used to remove the paint and a small bit of metal from the drive and non-drive side of the bb housing to make it smooth and insure that the surface is flat and even, then have the threads chased while your at it. Shimano even recommends this before installation of the splined bottom bracket. Now USE A TORQUE WRENCH and torque the bb to spec when you install it, lean toward the high side of the recommended range from the instruction sheet. Now install the crank arms applying grease to the BB splines before you set them in place. Tighten the crank arm bolts to the max torque that is recommended in the instruction sheet. Since I've done this the only thing that creaks on my bike is the saddle, due to a slightly bent seat rail. I did not teflon anything, tape anything, and the only lube I used was on the BB splines and it doesn't make a sound. Try facing the bb housing, chasing the threads, and then being annal about the torque spec. I think it will solve your problem.

Good Dirt
I have LX splined , but try changing your pedals first....Buzz

because it might strangely enough be your pedals . I repacked inside pedals with grease to cure that one.
I'd make damn sure it's a fault in the cranks first.drsam

Creaks can be mega annoying...I know.

They can also be hard to isolate sometimes.

It could be in the cranks, or it could be your peddles, or even your seatpost.
