Problems with MonkeyLite/Thomson Combination!!(6 posts)

Problems with MonkeyLite/Thomson Combination!!Big Bird
Oct 3, 2002 8:07 PM
I have a Thomson stem with an Easton MonkeyLite carbon riser bar. I am having a difficult time getting the bar to stay tight...and I am really starting to put some torque into it. What is going on? I didn't have this problem on my other bike (Ritchey WCS/MonkeyLite). Anybody have any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Are you using a torque wrench? It shouldn't take much to clamp that bar down. 5.5Nm is all it takes -more will damage the Monkeylite. If you've been guessing on the torque, you might have compressed the carbon fiber, then it's shot.

5.5Nm doesn't feel like that much force, so if you "put some torque into it", your chances aren't that great -which sucks because they cost $$$.

If you're lucky you've really been undertorqing (sp?), so bring it to 5.5Nm or have your LBS do it & see where you stand.

Any chance you had grease/oil on your hands that got on the bar while working on it? I have the same setup and have never had any problem, in fact, I went to remove my bar the other evening and found the two bottom bolts were loose and the bar still was still solid with just the two top bolts tight. You might try cleaning the center of the bar and the inside of the stem with rubbing alchohol or other degreaser just in case there is any oil/grease film.
I actually greased this interface.Locoman

I was having creaking issues and I greased everything, including bar/clamp interface. Big hits and never budges. Just careful that it's torqued properly.

I hadn't ever greased mine because of the metal/carbonfibre interface and hadn't had any creaking---I know that is really maddening to have a creak you can't find. I greased my interfact when I had an aluminum bar.
Could it be a road stem/face plate?-nmfattirewilly
