I have owed a set of Race Lites for 1 1/2 years. If you want a race only wheeset, they will work fine. I use them full time for XC riding, I'd probably not buy them again. First they are expensive - sure they are light, but I'm not sure the price is justified. I own several sets of wheels, and I'm not sure that the reduced weight (mostly in the rear hub) makes that much of a difference. Second, they are flexy. When I stand and sprint up a hill, the front rim rubs on both brakes pads (alternating with my pedal stroke) - I'm 170 pounds. Lastly, they have started creaking on climbs. The rear drive side spokes rub together while climbing making an annoying creaking noise.
On the other hand, I've ridden them for well over a year and have only had them trued once (and it barely needed it then). The hub is much quieter than a King, which to me makes King's unacceptable. Other than trying to make the creaking from the spokes go away they have been service free.

Wether or not this translates to crossmax? The bladed spokes for mtbiking bothered me. The Bontranger lites rock. I have a 2002 pair and notice no flex at all and are very durable other than truing every 2 months. I dented the rim once only becuase the tire pressure get too low during a race and didn't want to stop. I use them for xc riding and racing. I would say get the one with the best deal. If they didn't come on the Fuel I would have bought ck hubs with Mustang Rims. I weigh 180. |
