| Nuke Proof Mountain Bikes???!!! | njbuell Nov 6, 2002 12:52 PM | | Has anyone ever heard of a Nuke Proof Mountain bike, and if so what is the general opinion of these rides. They seem to be a decent bike but I'd like to hear from someone who's seen or owned one.
Thanks,

| two words: | slowSSer Nov 6, 2002 1:02 PM | | Old School!
always admired them, never got the chance to ride one. up there on my "desired" list of bikes, next to a Chris Chance Yo Eddy! |
| two different versions IIRC | Bob Nov 6, 2002 1:20 PM | | I think E2 is describing the original Nuke Proof bike, which if I remember correctly, were pretty nice. And carried that certain Fat Chance, Serotta, etc. cache.
I think one of the "online retailer's from Canada" picked up the name when Nuke Proof went belly up. These "new" "Nuke Proof" bikes go for dirt cheap.
Sorry I don't have specific info for you, but just wanted to clarify that you may be talking about two different breeds of bike. |

They have 3 frames the stealth (xc ht), the Reactor (FR Ht) and I can't remember the third one, but it looks more like a DJ or DS frame. The reactor frame looks a lot like my Kona stuff frame and I seriously considered getting one of these, but I figured for the $150 price difference with a disc upgrade I would pay the extra to get the LBS service and major manufacturer warranty support. The rest of it all depends on what build you put on it. I've seen the stealth in their shop and it looks pretty nice - I may try to pick one up cheap and build up an xc ht with it. |
| re: Nuke Proof Mountain Bikes???!!! | shake-n-bake Nov 6, 2002 10:12 PM | | Nuke Proof originally made Titanium frames way back when. Around 1995 or so they put out an aluminum frame called the Reactor. This frame only came in red and housed a rear shock inside the headtube. Not the
same as the Reactor you can now get.
The original Ti frames were sweet but are very rare (perhaps because many of them are cracked)! These "new" Nuke bikes have nothing in common with the "old school" bikes of yesteryear, except, of course,
the name. |
| re: Nuke Proof Mountain Bikes???!!! | radarstrom Nov 7, 2002 7:52 AM | | yea I have the TI frame. I cracked my '93 frame and they replaced it with a '95. I have raced on that frame since then. They were nice people it is a shame they are gone |
| about that Ti frame... | shake-n-bake Nov 7, 2002 9:04 PM | | in the later years Litespeed actually made the frames for NP. One way to tell is by checking out where the TT and the seat stays come together at the seat tube. If the seat stay is above the TT then it's a NP frame but if the ST and the TT are at the same height (roughly) then it's likely to be a Litespeed. If that's the case you'll want to hold on to that one! |
