Winter SPD Shoes....(13 posts)

Winter SPD Shoes....Dirt Pilot
Nov 6, 2002 1:33 PM
...I'm looking for some winter riding shoes. In past years I'v switched to platforms and insulated hiking boots but I'd rather stay with clipless.

Does anyone know where there's some good deals on winter SPD shoes/boots? The only ones that I'v seen go for about 200 bucks and the wife will kill me if I spend that much... but at least my feet will be nice and toasty!

Any clues?

i used to cross country ski in the anchorage area. we were using light racing shoes. we would buy a pair of very large rag wool socks and wear them OVER our shoes. the rotafella binding pins went through the sock and held the toe onto the ski binding quite well. believe it or not this kept our feet warm. first, it did not hold in moisture. second, it got a light coating of snow and created a nice insulated barrier to cold. you would not believe how effective this is. you can buy a large set of rag wool socks quite cheap. i would put them on the shoe and cut out a port in the bottom for your cleat. maybe stitch some reinforcement there. you might get some scree gators to wear over the whole set up. i think your feet will be toasty. get the scree gators and the wool socks at REI.

...Just to get your attention.

I thought you might be able to direct me to some mailorder places on your side of the border. I figger there's a larger market up there for cold weather riding gear.

I tried MEC but they dont send any of the shoes they have listed outside of Canada.

Thanks!

toe-ster booties, all the local roadies/cross bike guys swear by them around here (michigan) for winter training on their cross or mt. bikes. I don't have any experience with them yet but plan on picking up a pair soon. I was also told to wear a thin pair of polypropylene socks with a pair of "smart wool" socks over the polypro's and not to lace or buckle up to tight as it restricts blood flow to your feet. The LBS has the toe-ster booties for $50

well, you can spend 50 bucks for "toaster booties" or you can spend
5 bucks for rag wool socks at the war surplus store and spend the other 40 bucks for tires or something.

only drawback to the rag wool socks is they will hold an incredible amount of water if it rains.

the toaster booties are cool though.
Thanks guys...Dirt Pilot

...I guess I'm just gonna have to shell out the $$ for some winter shoes, probably the Northwave Grizzleys. I'v considered the booties but I'm due for some new shoes anyway so I'm gonna go for the warm ones.

Looks like the wifes gonna kill me... again.

Wait til I tell her they're too warm come spring time and I need a pair of warm weather shoes!

I think you'll really like the Grizzleys,I've had the Sidi Storms which were more money, but the Grizzleys are much better and warmer. One suggestion,I would get one size larger than your normal size to accomadate layering socks for different temperatures, also a little more room in the toe area provides a warm and toasty pocket to keep those toes warm.Hope this helps.

...I normally take a 10 1/2 so I figured an 11 would be the way to go.

Bummer...it's gonna be 55 and sunny today and I have to work 4 hrs over GRRR:( I have to pay for those shoes somehow I guess!
