| How should cables be routed over top tube? | abox Nov 6, 2002 8:39 PM | | My frame has three cable slots on the top tube. Which cables go in which slot? I put the back brake cable through the leftmost slot (furthest from chainrings), but now I'm thinking the front derailleur may go in that one? Help! |
| It doesn't matter ... | Philber Nov 6, 2002 9:36 PM | | Just pick the shortest routes that result in the fewest sharp bends and the fewest crossovers. It doesn't hurt to crossover housing, but crossing over cables is kind of bad karma. If it doesn't work for you, change it. Or, if you don't feel like all the mental effort, find a picture of a bike like yours in a magazine or a store and make notes. |
| Oh yeah ... | Philber Nov 6, 2002 9:41 PM | | Look at the cable guides brazed on to your frame, especially the ones near the back and the lower FD guide. Sometimes they're angled one way or the other - if you follow the angle, you'll get a good short round loop from wherever it's coming from, and a nice straight line into wherever it's going (like the rear brake or the front derailer). And following that angle will sometimes make it clear that the cable is supposed to come from one side or the other (of the seat post for example), so that might tell you what side of the top tube it goes down. |
| pattern I always followed was... | uber-stupid Nov 7, 2002 1:12 AM | | ...to have the two from the right side of the bar cross the front of the bike, and go into the slots you find there... traditionally, the brake on the leftmost slot. Then when you cross the front DR around from the left side, it goes into the right position without crossing anything. I also try (mostly for esthetic purposes) to alternate which housing crosses over in front of which, mostly making sure the front brake cable is behind something else, so it doesn't flap around as easily. So, from front to back the crossovers would be: rear brake housing, front brake housing, rear DR housing, front DR housing, into the slots as described above. |
| Are they all the same size? | third day Nov 7, 2002 10:32 AM | | If one of them is bigger, that would obviously be the one for the brake. If they are all the same, do whatever feels good. |
