Bunnyhop / J Hop(9 posts)

Bunnyhop / J HopPettyRider

I've been on a Bunnyhop vs J Hop quest to find the differences and history behind each. I've come far, but still haven't reached my initial goal for this search, and that was to find out what the "J" in J Hop signifies. Please let me know if you can so I can conclude my research. Thank you all.

J in J hop describes the movement of the rear wheel
Ain't worried 'bout th' J but, if I ever get the J-hop down patman w/ one hand

it won't matter if I learn anything else on a bike. It is easily the
"COOLEST" manuver in biking & it is the foundation for so much more.
Once mastered it will allow you to accomplish what your imagination
can throw at you. I have not in anyway mastered this tech. but, I do
have the mechanics of it down, I just need enough saddle time to
smooth th' edges, "diamond in th' rough", if you will. My "single-
handed" riding style makes it a "challenge" but it is do-able.
Don't get hung-up in th' terminology, just go ride.
Get a video, tape it, watch it about a 1k times, (in slo-mo) and
break it down. Bunny, J, whatever, it won't matter once you can do it.

Ride On,
Ride Hard.

I can do 'em, on a "20, but we just call it a bunnyhop. And I'm only worried about the terminology because it is needed for my report

Personally I think of J hopping as a moving lurch. vs bunnyhopping where you're just ... jumping. One involves a pedal stroke, the other does not.

That is a great skill to have.

well, I really just needed to know what the actual "J" stood for.. like maybe jump, jell-o, jamboree, jackass, etc? the rest I had already come across before.

What mtbikers think of as a bunny hop: lifting the entire bike all at once. You can get a foot off the ground if you're lucky.
What BMXers think of as a bunny hop: the technique shown in that ellsworth sequence. This is a true bunny hop.
Neither one is a J hop.
A J hop starts out like a true bunny hop. You lift the front wheel first. Then, instead of tucking in your legs to lift the rear wheel and land two wheeled, you lift the whole bike up and land on your rear wheel. Something like this:
