notubes rim strips and Mavic rims(5 posts)

notubes rim strips and Mavic rimsclimbo

OK, so you are supposed to talc the rims first. That's cool. I put mine on last night but near the valve stem, the strip seems really high on the rim beacuse of the extra rubber around the valve stem. Is this normal before putting the tire on or did anyone trim the rim strip to get it to sit down under the lip more?

I know it says the strip should be right up under the lip of the rim but it seems as though it could stop the tire seating correctly. Thanks.
I did on one set...B R H

and didn't on another. On the first set of wheels I did, I spent alot of time ensuring the strip was tucked under that lip perfectly. I trimmed the extra around the valve stem so that it would lay flat. On the other set I didn't spend nearly as much time and in fact the strip wasn't even tucked under properly around one of the valve stems. In the end it didn't seem to matter at all. I've had zero flats/problems of any sort since going tubeless. The strips aren't very elegant or refined, but they do seem to work quite well.

Thats the first I've heard of talcing the rim strip, I haven't done that with mine and I have yet to have a problem getting them on. I know what you are talking about around the stem, I was concerned with mine the first time I put them on and I spent some time with a tire tool getting the strip to lay under the lip. But since then I have changed tires out and didnt really worry too much about the strip around the valve stem and haven't had any problems with them sealing or the tire coming off the bead.

sounds good to give it a try then, thanks. The talc is under the rim strip to help it seat properly. Stan recommends it on Mavic 517's and other thinnner cavity rims.
note to self... read directions...ARmtnBIKER

Hmmm, guess I should of payed a little closer attention to the directions because I sure didn't know that was recomended for 517's. But it probably wouldn't of done me any good because I've always been one of these people that thought directions were to be used for emergency situations only, so that if you put something together and it doesn't work then you look back at the directions to see where you screwed up at. Guess I've just been lucky because 517's are what I am using my rim strips on, so far they have held air better than any tube ever has. I may add a pound or so every couple of days and thats it, and I think a lot of that has to do with the temperature changes here lately.
