I've read the reviews and the threads below. My needs are very specific: I'm a poor technical rider and need max traction and stability. My biggest problem is roots, but I also have trouble with loose stone and sand. I feel like my front tire is always on the edge of washing out, and sometimes it does. My position and weight distribution on the bike are OK. I run about 40 pounds pressure and weigh 180. My only tire experience is with Hutchinson Mosquito and IRC Mythos. The Mythos is better, but I still think it is too prone to slip on roots. My bike is a Giant NRS. Thanks in advance for any tire recommendations for my specific problems.

Of course some tires are better than others at specific jobs, but their overall effect is overstated. No matter what tires I'm using, I'm not going to finish in the top 25 percent anywhere. Just find some decent tires and ride, ride, ride.

Just ride and you'll get better. I have two wheelsets. One for racing and one for riding. The riding wheelset has some freakin' heavy specialized armidillo tires that are almost bullit proof. The rear tire is pretty much bald too. when ever I throw my race wheelset on... watch out! it make me feel like a goat!!!

At least in my experience you have to learn how to attack them. I have yet to find a tire that i truly felt i was comfortable with on wet roots, they are not going to be as grippy as a wet rock.

Most wet roots i will try to jump or have my momentum cary me up them so i can consentrate on putting my tires where i want them.

Was that 40 psi for front and rear? if so i would drop the psi on the front to about 38 psi and see how that feels maybe even lower.

studded Nokians wouldn't help on roots especially wet ones....fz4vgq

roots are definetely all technique. crank position-parallel to the ground (duh), light grip on the bars, pick the straightest line possible and try to be as light on the bike as possible.

Roots, especially wet ones are always fun. I live in central VA which has lots of roots on the trails I like to ride. I run Panaracer Fire XC on front and rear. They seem to do very well on roots. Try running a lower air pressure in your tires. I used to love high pressure in my tires - I felt it made my tires spin faster(less rolling resistance). Once I let my tires get a bit soft 30-35 psi. I was Amazed at how well they grip. I use 35 psi and lower and love it.
Try to ride at little lighter on you bike -practice going over stuff and floating over your bike as you bike does the work below you (this is the same technique for logs too). Try lifting up as you get to a root and rolling over it. It takes a bit of practice but you'll get it down no problem. Use the positive thinking too, if you know you are going to wipe out on roots you will.
drop tire pressure to 33-35, makes a huge difference. nmRide Biker

There's a nice little article in the Jan. issue of Mountain Bike (January issue came yesterday?!!) that's about geting through wet roots.
