What do you all think? Grind 'em down or leave 'em???næstep

Looks like bad news when I spill.

Another alternative to removal is to try and find a headset with a taller stack height at the bottom cup (that's an FSA Orbit XLII on there now).

In addition to the guides on either side of the head tube, there are two more pairs of guides like these further down the down tube.

It's a lost cause, you'll have to give the frame and fork to me. Which frame is that, I'm digging the color.
I wouldn't leave it, and would at least grind down and touch up paint.
My guess is you are using this as a SS frame?
Mfg. just wrote back and said to leave them...næstep

...and thinks they'll take the abuse. I'm still not so sure. So give my your shipping address and I'll get it boxed up... :^)

SS? No, but close. It's a Van Dessel Buzz Bomb with a Speedhub providing drivetrain duties. They just sent me out this frame to replace the original, which I goofed and ordered a size too large (but didn't have this problem).

Think I'll check with FSA and see if they have a special headset cup.

(Actually, this is the original "too big for me" frame that I returned to them.)

I have 3 VanDessels, but not the Buzz Bomb (Superfly, Country Road Bob, and Skyline) which I share with my family and use for road rides and grocery-getting. Very cool, unique bikes. Enjoy yours.

how difficult is it to rig it up to a horst link boinger like your nrs? i have been thinking about that system for awhile. it seems to have lots of benefits-- weight not being one of them. btw... how much weight did it add to the bike?

thanks

Pretty straightforward...næstep

It's a pretty straight-forward installation. I actually just wrote all about it in this thread, including a half-answer to your weight question and a bunch of photos.

I checked w/ Van Dessel to feel out if they were clearing out such beauties, and I was quoted a several week wait time & an msrp pricetag of $2300. You got a screamin' deal naestep!
Maybe one day they'll make custom-colored Speedhubs-I can see it now "collect all 5..."

He really came through for me. I was told they were down to their last three when I contacted him, and he pulled off one heck of a deal. A very slightly used one popped up on eBay recently that I'll be watching with interest.

I wouldn't grind the stops down on the frame, i think i'd try to do something with the fork caps. they are cheaper to replace if something go's wrong in the process.
Unfortunately, those caps are actually the...næstep

Just angle the guides a bit to get enough room to get the caps by. If you do use the guides, the cable housing should move far enough to let the caps by. i assume you don't plan on spinning the bars on midair jumps too often where this would become an issue.
But spinning the bars...næstep

...and while they don't have any taller cups or crown races to offer to fit my XLII, Tom offered a list of the lower stack heights of all their other headsets. Among others, they do have a Orbit MX headset with 5.2mm of additional lower stack height. If it's enough, I'll probably go that route instead of hacking the frame.

Thanks all for the input (happily putting the Dremel back in it's case).

The good news is I don't need a new headset...næstep

The bad news is I need to drop the fork 10 or 12mm to clear the cable guide, so the 5mm extra clearance of the Oribt MX ain't gonna cut it.

Speaking of "cutting it," where'd I put that damn Dremel?!?

Should be able to pick up some orange nail polish in the WalMart halloween closeout aisle.
