Are LX V-brakes a worthy upgrade?(4 posts)

Are LX V-brakes a worthy upgrade?GirchyGirchy

Since I'm going disc in front, I figured I'd stick an LX V-brake on the rear to enhance the rear braking. Do you think it would be a worthy upgrade over the stock no-name V's? I got a pair for $25 (wanted to make the LBS happy), and haven't really tried it out yet because it only had one mounting bolt. I stuck them on for a few minutes with the shorter bolts from my stock V's, and the pads are like bloody steel wool! So I figure I'll replace those, which is another $7 or so. Do you think this is ok, or would it be better spent on a shock pump or my front Avid?
if you aren't lucky with your stock brakes, yes IF you will ...Igor (H.H.)

I think that's my plan. I'll get a set of Kool Stop V-brake pads, and try them out on both my stock and LX (they're non-cartridge Vs), and directly compare the two. Then, I can either take back the LX's with their stock pads and keep the Kool Stops on the stocks, or keep the LXs and Kools. Thanks for reinforcing my decision :)
I hope it helped, good luck. (nm)Igor (H.H.)
