Nov 7, 2002 7:19 PM
Need help,I have a stock 2002 dakar jamis comp but I really need some
improvements would like to spec it out nicely.

Thinking about changing from xt to xtr derailer with new xtr shifters/cables.

eventually monkey lite handlebars,xtr-crankset,wheel set etc.

Need help, has anyone upgraded a dakar comp and what should be upgraded first?,I have to do it bit by bit little by little any sugestions would be apreciated.

Thanks
I think those upgrades will be spectacularly unnoticeable ...Philber

You're not going to notice much difference between an XT rear derailer and an XTR. You will likely notice some difference going from Deore shifters to XTR, but I think the improvement will be less than you're expecting. Try out a bike with XTR and see if you like the feel of the shifting that much better. If you're looking for crisper shifting, the best way to get that is to replace your cables IMO. I don't think you'll notice much difference going from the LX crankset (which is an excellent crankset) to the XTR (and you'll have to buy a new BB, which will work exactly the same as the old one). I also don't think you'll notice much of a difference by changing handlebars, etc. Sorry, but I think you'd be better off saving your money, replacing things only when they break, and putting the money you save towards a new XTR bike down the road. Otherwise, you're taking perfectly good components, and a perfectly good bike, and just throwing money at it.
What about this?AlphaDog

Have you ever tried a RapidRise XTR derailler? I've been running one for years, works much better.

I just bought a bike with a 2002 XT rear derailler on it. It shifts terribly compared to RapidRise. Much slower changing the gears, and not very smooth. RapidRise lets you shift smoothly while standing during a climb!

Your LX cranks are pretty good stuff. XTR may feel a little stiffer, but I doubt you'll feel that much for all the $'s.

I would just run normal cables, but don't lube them and use the teflon coated wires like JagWire or the XTR cables.

What about tires? Tires make a huge difference in the ride quality of your bike? Do you run different tires for different conditions?

I would pass on the monkeylite unless you like hood ornaments.

How are your wheels? Wheels will be much more noticable than Cranks.

Or the best option of all, buy a plane ticket to Moab and have fun with your bike just the way it is.

The Dakar Comp is spec'd pretty well. LX and XT stuff is pretty good for most. XTR is generally lighter (except the shifter?), but will not net you significantly more performance for what they cost.

I agree with Philber that a cable change may help shifting. I also agree that the LX cranks are probably the best cranks for the money.

The only place I can see some improving is in the wheelset. I think they use Deore hubs and 223 rims. A change to a lighter wheelset may provide a noticeable difference in acceleration. The next place might be the fork, but only if you have problems with it. The Hayes HMX comp brakes should be good, albeit a little heavy.

Overall, its a pretty decent bike. Ride it till things break and then upgrade. Unless you have Upgradeitis which afflicts many of us.

Everything else on that bike is decent and you can run it until it breaks. I had a 2000 Dakar that I rode stock for about 8 months. First thing I replaced was the stock wheelset and I suggest you do the same. You can spend as much or as little as you like and pretty much anything should be an upgrade over the stock wheels.

Fork was my next upgrade. I just recently bought a new frame and all new components except my wheels and fork which I swicthed over from the jamis.

Good luck.

First what type of fork is on your bike?? If it is a Manitou Black and the stickers come off I suggest you dont take paint thinner to clean off the residue.. I have heard it removes paint.. My best advice is to always take it to your local bike shop before you F*** it up!! Besides that it is a good bike just ride it...!!
