Cranial-mounted headlight?(13 posts)

Cranial-mounted headlight?Huey

It'd like to do away with my helmet for the winter, but it would be nice if I could still wear my headlight mount, maybe if I rig something up from a Petzel or Black Diamond harness or soemthing. Has anyone tried this? What are my other choices? Or other possiblities? A helmet is useless in deep winter cold when you need a nice plush balaclava hat.

You probably don't.

I always ride with my helmet, but I like to use my TurboCat light for night snowshoeing and caving as well.

I used a harness from a piece o' crap Petzl light I used to use for camping.

Remove the light unit from the Petzl harness.
File down the side mounting brakets on the harness.(they're plastic) You want a flat surface for your light to sit on.
Thread the end of the head strap through the stock mounting plate of your light. (this is easy with my light, your results may vary)
That's it. Piece of cake.

I have been able to do this with my L&M Arc light as well.

If you're not a DIY type, TurboCat sells a harness for this purpose.

Happy head trauma.

The rest of these boneheads just like to hear themselves yammer I think. They know nothing about my circumstances.

I only go helmetless on my recumbent. I only ride the recumbent on no-slip surfaces. On my mtb, I have studded snow tires (and wear a helmet, blah blah blah), but on winter days when the pavement is dry I can't wear out the studs and I don't like the rough ride, so the recumbent will have to do. If you know anything about 'bents, you know that they do not invite you to take risks, so they're safer in that regard, and they are MUCH safer in the "tumbling-head-over-handlebars" department. That just doesn't happen on a bent. The only head injury you're likely to sustain on a bent is a car-related injury, and those are usually too nasty for a helmet to do much good anyway. Moreover, a car accident is likely to toss me into a nice soft snowbank. But I won't be taking risks. The greater risk is getting frostbite when it's 20 below.
Helmet 'USELESS' in Winter ?? I disagreecomma

with you on that statement. Their are other ways to keep warm in Winter, without eliminating the helmet! "Just My Opinion", and yes I know 'opinions are like a$$holes', everybodys got one........

Good Luck.

A helmet is useless in deep winter cold? No, it's not. Especially with all of the ice and snow on the roads and trails. I commute to work all winter in temperatures as cold as -20 C and I still wear my helmet. Just wear your helmet over top of your balaclava, and get some good goggles (Adidas makes some good ones, or try ski goggles).
Thank you too, ZagHuey

I didn't read your message in time, so I guess I lumped you in with the "boneheads" who had nothing constructive to say. Still, I disagree, given my unique riding circumstances.

If you do not need the helmet you do not really need the light either!

Less weight, too!

You are by far more prone to crashing and hurting yourself in the winter than in warm weather. The cold makes your muscles stiffen up and you dont have as good of control. Not to mention moist conditions makes it slippery.Wear your helmet young man or go to your room.

rethink ditching the helmet?cygnus

i'd consider rethinking the ditching of your the helmet. riding in icy conditions is where i feel the greatest need for a helmet. it's amazing how fast your front tire can slip out and you're on your head. sometimes i add a gortex cover to my helmet to maintain a bit more heat. i do have to take that off for the headlamp though. when it gets really cold, i add some pile earflaps that i made (velcro to the helmet straps). various coverings including Buffs can help cover skin too.

i'm don't intend to preach about the merits of helmets; you know best about your riding conditions.

It's that rock just under the ice that your skull manages to get through that'll kill you.
