Help Please: can I use 7.5w or 10w oil in my Manitou Black?Mike_Daniels

I have a 2003 Black that is way to spongey. I even bought the extra firm spring kit (190-215 pounds), but it is still too soft for the type of riding I do and my weight (230 pounds). I've added the maximum volume of oil but it is still soft. The owner's manual specifically says to use only 5wt shock oil, but I would like to use a 7.5w or 10w shock oil. Do you think this would cause damage to the fork? Most other big brands of forks (e.g., Marzocchi and Rock Shox) allow you to run a range of shock oils to custom tune your fork. Is this Manitou so special (or so crappy) that you can't run different oil weights?

Thanks for the help.

Don't take my word for it, but I say sure!Matno

I doubt that the increased damping would damage a Manitou fork. Manitou makes some of the toughest forks out there. You could try contacting them directly if you're unsure. Also, www.angryasian.com would certainly have the answer if you need a quicker answer.

Being a 200lb rider, I have gone throught the same set up issues with with my Manitou Mars Super. I installed the extra firm spring kit and swapped oil to 10w Maxima (a motorcycle fork oil). The fork works really great with this set up. I've been using the 10w oil for almost a year now with no problems.
Same with my X-Vert...næstep

No problem here either. Second Craig's comment to pick up some Maxima motorcycle fork oil. Maxima's web site has a dealer locator to ease your search for the cheaper and more plentiful quart bottles that contain the same stuff as the 8 oz bottles sold in bike shops.

Just note that Maxima doesn't sell 7.5 wt in the quart bottles, but then again, with a quart of 5wt and 10wt and a measuring cup, you can come up with any viscosity in that range to suit your preferences.

Thanks for the input.

I'll probably try switching to 7.5w first and if that doesn't work, I'll bump it up to 10w.
