| Correct way to measure stem length | AK47 Dec 14, 2002 4:51 PM | | What is the correct way to measure stem length? Is it from the center of the headset to the end of the stem? Just need some help as I want to upgrade the stem on my current bike and want to get the same length that I currently have. Thanks! |
| center to center | JimC. Dec 14, 2002 5:02 PM | | center of the headset to center of the bars. Or, take the stem off the bike, measure center of 1 hole to center of the other hole. Jim (flunked rocket science) C |

| Realize though, that with more rise... | daveM Dec 15, 2002 6:11 PM | | there is less forward extension. If you have a trig calculator (or a construction master calc), you can figure out your actual forward extension for different rise/extension combo's. |
| I just so happen to have... | næstep Dec 15, 2002 6:20 PM | | ...this handy Excel spreadsheet I put together for just such a purpose -- It'll give relative approximations of rise and reach of 3 stems side by side. Not absolute, but ballpark. For instance, look how the reach of a 90mm x 6° stem and 105mm x 25° stem are relatively similar, while the rise increases dramatically.
