I am considering drilling my valve holes to go from presta to schrader tubes. Is this stupid?

Nope. I have done it many times. I just dont like those troublesome skinny valves.
Unless you are using really skinny rims, it shouldnt be a problem. Be sure to clean up the hole with a small file, chainsaw files work well for this, so that you dont damage tubes/fingers. :)
Then give away all your skinny valve tubes. They arent as easy to find around as the schrader tubes. You can find schrader tubes at any mom and pop hardware store, big discount store, target, Kmart, bike shop, etc. Presta tubes seem to be only prevalent in bike shops.
