| last trip to lbs... plus bike porn | timber Dec 15, 2002 2:54 PM | | i got a new (used) voodoo shango frame a couple of weeks ago, i got it all built up but needed full length cables since the previous owner drilled out the cable stops. i do like to give some business to LBSs so i took it in to one and explained what i needed to the shop owner. he wheeled it in back to the shop room and said itd be ready in 4 days. i was hoping to get it done right away (im sure you all know about wanting to get on your shiny new bike RIGHT NOW) but i was in no real big hurry so i said ok and left. i waited till the dsesignated day and went back to pick it up, the owner met me when i came in and said there was a problem and i should go see the "mechanic" in the back. i went in the back and found the shop kid who proceeded to tell me that they couldnt run the cables with the stops drilled. try to visualize this- cable housing run from the levers and shifters through the 1st cable stop down the toptube to the 2nd stop and cut, bare cable from the 2nd stop around the seat tube to the derailers and rear brake. the kid started telling me why this wouldnt work like he was some sort of expert and i had no clue about bikes, i cant remember what all he was saying because i was in shock at what i was looking at. i stopped him during his lecture and explained to him what i meant by full length housing, he looked at me like i had no idea what i was doing. at this point i told them just to sell me 20 ft of cable housing and id do it myself. so from there to the cash register and out the door i got comments like "thatll never work", "be sure to use a lot of grease because of all the friction that much housing will cause", and "boy are those shifters and brakes going to be spongy". anyways it took my bike and 20ft of cable home, had itll all together, adjusted and was riding in about 20 minutes. ive got 3 local shops, one is basically bmx and has no knowledge of MTBs, one is a roady haven and they act like they have to go out of theyre way for MTB stuff, this particular one is the local Specialized dealer so i figured id be safe there, not. looks like if got to travel from now on when i need something done.
oh yeah, heres the bike.

| Sweet Ride - Burly ! Been wantin' to go full length myself... | man w/ one hand Dec 16, 2002 9:13 AM | | LBS told me it would void the warranty if we drilled out the stops.
RM Reaper - says it has a 1 yr. warranty. That yr. is winding down
quick. Goin' the whole 9 yds. when it does.
Sweet Frame !

| Sweet Ride - Burly ! Been wantin' to go full length myself... | timber Dec 16, 2002 9:23 AM | | i think it was easier to run full length than open cables. the install took no time at all. the only trouble was the lbs. i wonder why they dont come this way? |
