Glad to hear you're back on the active list. I'm sure you are too...
I was looking at your Van Dessel down the page a bit... what kind of rear fender is that, hooked up to your V-bosses? That thing is sweet, and I'm in need of such sweetness. I imagine it doesn't keep your feet very dry, but hey, I'll deal with wet feet as long as I don't have the whole muddy back and hair thing going. Mud's easy to explain away, but for every person I make my excuses to, I'm sure there are 12 who thought I had some wild bowel control issues on some of the wetter days. |
| Look at me! I'm a big fat idiot! | uber-stupid Dec 16, 2002 12:05 AM | | OK, so I got all hot and heavy, adn just couldn't wait to make it down those next two posts to where you told where you got it...
It's still a sweet fender, adn it's still good to hear you're up and runnign again. :) |
| Thanks for the kind words; I may have jumped the gun on the fender recommendation... | næstep Dec 16, 2002 9:06 AM | | I took it out in the driving rain yesterday, and I'll be damned if I didn't come back with a muddy stripe on my backside!
I can look at this a couple of ways:
1) It's my first fender. Maybe I'm expecting too much.
2) The mud stripe wasn't as bad as when I ride fenderless.
2a) Maybe the fender did it's job.
2b) Maybe it was raining so heavily the mud was worse but got washed away.
In any case, I emailed Mud Machine to see if they have a longer shroud or an extension piece to attach. The fact that I'm running 29" wheels may have something to do with the coverage I'm getting. I want this fender to work because it's solid and quiet and nicely constructed, but on the other hand, I'm out nearly $50 and have added anywhere from 1/3 to 1/2 pound for the privilege of bolting this fender to my frame, so I expect it to work.
I need to strap it to my 26" bike to see if I get better results with the smaller tires, but I need it for the big bike. I'll update the post when I get a response from Mud Machine.

| Thanks for the kind words; I may have jumped the gun on the fender recommendation... | uber-stupid Dec 16, 2002 10:49 AM | | That's cool... let me know how the investigation turns out.
On second glance, I remember thinking that maybe the fender would have some problems, since, if you look at possible mud trajectories (ugh, physics) from the extreme back end of the wheel, they could still arc past the end of the fender, to get at your head, of if it's slower going, just lob bits of mud at your backside...from the tail of the tire up over the fender end at you. Just draw tangent lines from the back of the tire crossing the back of the fender, and see where they point... looks to me like more or less at your shoudlers and head... and lower, if the mud isn't flying as fast, and it arcs down...
If Mud machine isn't much help, maybe try drilling and screwing on an extension to the fender that goes a little farther back? Or just give it to me :) |
| That fender is too short to be effective | shiggy Dec 16, 2002 11:39 AM | | That a straightedge and hold it against the back of the tire. The rotate it forward until it touches the back edge of the fender. Notice the line the straightedge follows above the fender. Anything behind the line gets muddy, anything in front is protected (somewhat).
I use a Headland Backscratcher with a home made mud flap.
