Second thoughts on a HECKLER(4 posts)

Second thoughts on a HECKLER2big2ride
Dec 16, 2002 3:32 AM
After breaking all there is to break on an NRS, I put my name on the LONG list for one of the new Hecklers. According to the bike shop they should be here this month....Anyway, in my waiting I have had the chance to ride a hardtail and have enjoyed it. SO I am "Thinking" about ditching the SC and building up a Cove Stiffee. I weight about 220lbs on the hoof and ride Maryland state parks and watersheds (XC and rocks) The issue of the SC frame with the pivots and 5th element kinda gives me nightmares and spending all this money and having problems with the mechs. A stiffee is just a stout frame that will take all the punishment I can give it. Simple to maintain and a lot cheaper. How much comfort would I be losing? and would it be worth it? Please give me your opinions..Also why haven't I seen any reviews for the stiffee in the hardtail columns?
Thank you

I've ditched my FS bikes for a hardtail and a fully rigid bike. My trails don't require full suspension (although it makes it more "comfortable") and I can do all the jumps the local downhill guys have made on my hardtail. The Heckler is a sweet ride, but if your feeling like going hardtail, do it. The Cove is stiff, period. Another option would be the Surly Instigator. Under $400 bucks, HUGE tire clearance (my 2.7" fits with room to spare and I run 18 spds.), and it is noticeably more comfortable on the trail than my aluminum hardtail. It'll put the fun back into some trails that you may have grown "bored" on due to the comfort of full suspension.
Hard call...RP

There are a lot of FS bikes that can handle your weight. The NRS is on the XC side of the spectrum which makes it a poor choice for a 220lbs crusher.

I don't think I'd consider a FS ride less durable.

More expense...Yep

More maintainance...Yep

The only reason I'd move back to a HT is if I was doing a lot of wet muddy riding. Even then I'm not sure I'd be willing to ride a Stiffee through rock gardens vs a Heckler. That said your conditions may be best served with a HT. What are you mates riding?
