| Ques. re: disc hubs and rims made for V-brakes...help | GNR Dec 16, 2002 6:49 AM | | I'm hoping to buy my first disc wheelset and am wondering besides the weight issue, are there any drawbacks to having a disc setup with non-disc-specific rims that can also work with V-brakes? Are there any? If so, what disc specific rims are people using that aren't UST? Thanks for any help. |

2. Save your $$ for a bit longer and get a good disc wheelset. You will curse later for having gotten the heavier iron. XT disc hubs weigh a friggin TON. Go figure.
3. I have built disc wheels on non-disc-specific Ritchey rims. If you want to save $, Cambria is selling these same rims for $15. They are way better than 15 bucks. I think it is a matter of cosmetics-they are silver and not very trick looking, and also they are not as light as the disc specific Ritcheys I am building now, but the cheaper one is a bit tougher, so you make the choice. However, it is a better rim than the celebrated Rhynolight-lighter and stronger.
4. As noted I am building disc-specific Ritcheys and a Bontrager RaceDisc, and I am impressed with the later rim. Not quite as light as the Ritchey, but stronger in every dimension. Got it from Cambria for a decent price as well. There is always the Mavic 317, which is a very decent rim, and quite tough. I tend to like the OCR feature of the Bontragers and Ritcheys, so I go with them when I can. |

| XT Disc-Sun Rhyno lite user reports | Mr Magoo Dec 16, 2002 8:10 AM | | I got the disc//V set up at thge outset for the same reason as you. I figured if something didn't work out I could strapp on the v's. In reality, I wouldn't go back eeven in a pinch, I'd probably buy a new(second) set of disc brakes vs making due with my spare v's.
I hear all the time that XT is too heavy and while math is math, they are long lasting. The rhyno rims are strong and true, but the side walls get nicked up on rocks. I end up filing burrs off. I guess that the triangular shape of disc specific rims would alleviate that. I have seen XT-Disc-rhyno combos on the net for $170. My set is 2 years old, scratched up but technically new running. Spend more if you like. The next time around, I'll probably get something pricier(umm, king), but getting your feet wet with the XT's is a solid decision. |

But for my 2 bits, I've been told that mavic D521s work well in either v or disc configurations... |
