Whoa, let me calm down

I had my LBS install a new raceface taperlock (the red one) on a Gary fisher 3 sugar because of all the driveline problems. So everything's working pretty good. Tonight I get a SRAM 99 chain, a 9.0 cassette and a raceface middle ring to put on that piece of crap bontrager crank. So I'm putting the crank back on by turning that screw on the outside with the 8mm wrench (it was really hard to turn)and I notice the BB has pushed towards the non-drive side of the bike. The crank wont turn because it is hitting the frame.

Did I strip the BB, or worse the thing that holds the BB!!!

HELP ME

....I know when I'm installing a BB, I screw it in from the drive side (the only way you can do it) until I get it to where I need, then lock it in place with the non-drive side cup. Maybe that cup wasn't locked down properly and somehow backed out and allowed you to further screw your BB into the shell? Seems odd because the spindle should spin freely and not allow any pressure on the BB threads.

Maybe you just need some spacers on the driveside of your BB......

I can't imagine how installing a crank would strip your BB housing...but maybe you stripped it when installing the BB and not the crank?

Good luck.

Thanks for the quick reply.

The BB was already installed---somehow when I was tightening that 8mm bolt that sort of re-installs the crank--the whoe BB pushed about 5mm towrds the non crank side

thanks

Still not sure how that happens but.....Cook

...I think the BB must not have been installed correctly in the first place. Do you have a BB tool? If so, I'd remove your cranks, back the BB out on the drive side the required amount, then lock it tight on the non-drive side.

Though, if it was your LBS that installed the BB, be patient and get them to check it. That way if anything is screwed up, hopefully they will honor any replacement or work that needs to be done due to their shoddy installation.

Just in case you don't know and are going to work on your own BB, turn forward to remove and back to install. (ie: to remove, turn clockwise on the drive side, counter clockwise on the non-drive side)
it sounds kinda backwards, but that's the way it is.

Cheers

It would be unlikely that I stripped out the actual frame??????? I am very worried about this particular concept.

thanks jack
Yeah, the cap is threaded normally - CCW to removethird day

I have been thinking and thinking but I can't imagine what is wrong. I have worked on dozens of BB's but have never heard of anything like what you describe. Maybe the threads in the BB shell are stripped? If you push or pull on the cranks, can you get the BB to move again, either back to the right or further to the left?

Man, i don't know what happened, except maybe I used the wrong crank extractor. At 0900 I am going to run like a damsel in distress to the LBS

I realy appreciate all your help

The racerace taperlock BB is designed to work on both a 68mm and a 73mm bb and is adjustable to fit both. you bike shop didn't install it correctly and it is turning and changing it's setup. there is a lockring inside that you have to set to the correct width for your BB and it is turning instead of staying fixed. download the manual for it here:
