| BB for 2002 NRS | NRS QUESTION Jan 23, 2003 7:00 AM | | what size BB is needed for a 2002 Giant NRS (length and shell) thanks... |
| 68mm shell; spindle depends on your choice of crank & BB... | næstep Jan 23, 2003 7:16 AM | | My '01 NRS came set up with a 50mm chainline, but it seems like current models bring the chain in closer. Tell us what you're going to run, since spindle lengths can vary from crank to crank depending on model, brand and or interface.

| 68mm shell; spindle depends on your choice of crank & BB... | NRS QUESTION Jan 23, 2003 7:26 AM | | I'm runing an lx splined crank and foget the bb, but it came off my old frame...went with my cranks...what should i be looking for to see if I get a 50mm chainline... its a 2001 lx splined...not sure of the model and i beliese es-71 for the BB... |
| This might not help... | makalu Jan 23, 2003 7:35 AM | | But on my 2002 Rainier, I run an 02 LX crank with ES70 BB. Same setup as you. I have a 68x113 BB.
Totally different frames, but I thought maybe this could help. If it does not, I apologize |
| 68mm shell; spindle depends on your choice of crank & BB... | næstep Jan 23, 2003 7:48 AM | | I'd personally go with a 118 for a 50mm chainline on this one (should be the 571 LX crank, right?), but like makalu suggests, a lot of riders are using the narrower 47mm chainline that the 113 ES70/71 provides with this crank. I think you can safely get away with either length.
If the 113 ES71 prooves to be too short, you can sometimes shim the drive side flange just enough to make things right.
General rule of thumb for chainlines: 47.5mm is "straight" and correct most of the time, but for reasons I can only guess at, FS and/or fat tubed aluminum bikes are recommended to use 50mm. That's a very general rule of thumb and is successfully violated all the time.

| To add to Naestep's post | makalu Jan 23, 2003 9:12 AM | | The 113 BB works just fine on my bike, as I am sure the 118 would. The difference is basically that your chain will angle out away from the bike slightly more on the 118.
Naestep is tons more knowledgable than I when it comes to everything bike, so I would no doubt follow his advice.
I chose the 113 BB, cause that is what Giant recommended, and the stock BB was of size 113. |

| LX 118 | sweathog Jan 23, 2003 8:30 AM | | When I got my 02 NRS 3 the shop ugraded the cranks to 02 LX with a 118 ES 70 spindle (I forgot the shell width - I'm not at home to look at the receipt). The 118 works fine. |
| re: xt splined cranks-es-71bb/ 68x113 | larryc Jan 23, 2003 2:30 PM | | I tried a 118 as suggested here but the chainline was off 3mm/ the 113 works exc.;luckily superGo exchanged it.med. frame nrs3. |
| Well sure it was 3mm off... | næstep Jan 23, 2003 3:23 PM | | Bikes that spec 50mm chainline use exactly the same rear wheel as a bike that specs a 47.5mm chainline, and both use 135mm dropout spacing.
The 50mm chainline spec is not intended to give you pefect middle ring/middle cog alignment. Instead, it is a compromise that provides adequate crankarm clearance and front derailleur operating range. Almost any bike with a 50mm chainline is "off" by 2 or 3mm.
