| Do you ride the road??? | makalu Jan 23, 2003 10:25 AM | | If so, post some pics of your road machines!!!
I am eager to be getting my road steed. I go to RBR.com and look for pics, but there never are that many (not many good ones I shoudl say).
So lets see what you guys ride when your not on the dirt.
This is what I am getting:

| Yup | Nuget Jan 23, 2003 10:43 AM | | I decided last year that it'd be nice to have a road specific bike to just log some miles when I couldn't get to the trail. Being that i'm more of an offroad biker than a road biker I decided upon a Surly Cross Check. I use it mostly on the road since it's built as a SS but it's ready for the trail whenever.
Loged around 200 miles at the end of last season and it was great. Had a blast and enjoyed all the comments and whispers from people as I wizzed by them on a bike with drop bars. The twichy steering was a bit weird at first but it was pretty comfortable after a month. It wasn't too bad a deal for $400
But of course it might be nice to pick up an actual road bike in the future. That trek looks pretty nice.
Have a good one |
| Another CrossCheck SS | EricTheRed Jan 24, 2003 10:00 AM | | I only ride road for getting to/from work and to/from trail. Cars scare me more than tree and rocks! -e |
| Yes.... | LowCel Jan 23, 2003 10:47 AM | | You will be amazed by how much riding a road bike helps you on your mtb. I couldn't believe how much I improved on my climbing, especially on fire roads. I knocked my time on one of the fireroads from about 18 minutes to 12 1/2 minutes in just a couple of months. I try to ride my road bike 3 times a week, once with a bike club, one long ride (50 - 60 miles), and my other ride is a 15 mile loop near my house with a bunch of climbs that I like to time to help keep track of progress. Keep in mind that I live in West Virginia so there are climbs everywhere.
Anyway, here is a pic of my road bike. It is a K2 mod 4.0 with full Ultegra and Cosmic Elite wheels. |
| Just a suggestion, but did you look at... | GirchyGirchy Jan 23, 2003 11:14 AM | | any Specialized roadies? For 2003 they came out with some huge deals on their Allez line. I was ready to buy one before mt. bike upgrade fever kicked into gear.
Take a look at the Allez Elite 27...for only $50 more, you can upgrade to the entire Shimano 105 line, plus get a carbon seatpost.
http://www.specialized.com/SBCBkModel.jsp?san=03AllezElite27&bl=road&my=2003
Just a suggestion though. The Trek looks quite good too!
Brian (wishing he could afford a roadie right now) |
| Pure steel baby! | 2melow Jan 23, 2003 11:16 AM | | Independent Fabrication Crown Jewel. Yum. |
| Beautiful IF | LowCel Jan 23, 2003 11:27 AM | | The white if is a great looking bike. I almost bought an independent frame but I ended up getting too good of a deal on my K2, couldn't pass it up.
As for Makalu, go for the specialized, or something else with at least 105 or better components. You always want to get the best components you can, they make a big difference. Just think, 105 is comparable to LX, you wouldn't want lower than LX on a mountain bike would you? |
| The Specialized is quite nice | makalu Jan 23, 2003 11:37 AM | | And I did look into it, but the cost differencial is almost $200. The Allez 27 lists for $1140, the Trek 1200 for $850.
I considered the benfits/drawbacks to spening a higher amount, and for me, did not think the 105 components were worth the money. I believe the 1200 is the at the perfect pricepoint.
If needed, I could probably use the Tiagra components until they wear out, and then, use the $200 to upgrade. |
| The Specialized is quite nice | LowCel Jan 23, 2003 11:58 AM | | my bad, on the site you gave the link to it says "Advertised Retail $989.99*". That is what we were going by. |
| Maybe | makalu Jan 23, 2003 12:36 PM | | The price on Specialized site is wrong, cause you said it was only $50 difference. Even at $989, the diff is more than $50.
Am I missing something??? |
| My bad | LowCel Jan 23, 2003 12:50 PM | | My bad, I was just going by Girchy saying $50, it's actually $151. Does make a difference, Sorry, under the circumstances I would go for the Trek as well, sorry for giving you bad info. |
| Please | makalu Jan 23, 2003 1:06 PM | | No reason to say your sorry.
Yeah, the Trek it is. I always wanted a Trek roadie as well.
You can now call me Makalu Armstrong!!! LOL |
| re: Do you ride the road??? | AFred Jan 23, 2003 11:32 AM | | All of the exciting technical developments are happening in connection with off-road rigs. But when it comes to pure adrenalin on the pavement, King Eddy is where it's at... |
| No pics, just..... | Cook Jan 23, 2003 12:02 PM | | ...memories of arriving at work in January looking like a walking salt-lick.
Gawd, I wish I was still commuting............ |
| Not my first love but... | Berkeley Mike Jan 23, 2003 12:04 PM | | it is a nice option when it's too damned muddy or I'm feeling beaten-up by the dirt or want to give my legs a diifferent workout. I ride this '82 Medici Pro Strada. Steel. Campy. Upgraded to 12, count 'em, 12 speeds. |
| you have not ridden until you have tubbed... | clary. Jan 23, 2003 1:24 PM | | Has anyone seen my stolen Cinelli?
My current tubbed two wheeler (tubular tired) is a Colnago period nuovo/super record.
For security reasons, here is a glimpse of a part of the bike only... |
| yea...but rarely... | kam Jan 23, 2003 1:27 PM | | i really started to ride her recently, i'm waiting on my custom steel single speed mtb frame and the roadie was the only bike i had built up ready to ride. it's an old frame, maybe '98 or '99, and it has a few battle scares (i bought it off a former racer), but it's freakin' light, fast and has abit of a springy ride. i may order a custom zona road frame from peyto cycles in am month or so (the top tube on my frame is just a tad long). built up with a look hsc3 fork, dura ace shifters, ultegra ders. and cassette, stronglight cranks and sun ringle pro elite wheels. enjoy your new ride and the road!
cheers. |
| re: Do you ride the road??? yep w/geax kevlar reverts. | larryc Jan 23, 2003 2:24 PM | | $10 while they last-26x 1.85 at nashbar. made by vittoria I believe.thats 1/2 $$$costs-reg. $35.470 grams. |
| Not anymore.......... | KB Jan 23, 2003 3:06 PM | | Not anymore, sold the road bike to buy my wife a diamond necklace. Too damn dangerous around LV anyway, have come way to close to eating way too many trucks on the roads outside LV.

| My road steed | BillyTK Jan 23, 2003 3:39 PM | | Bianchi SL with veloce drivetrain and Bianchi wheels(8.4Kilos). |
| Thought about used? | Ajax Jan 23, 2003 8:54 PM | | There are alot of great used road bikes for sale out there, and they don't get as abused as mountain bikes.
I bought a used Schwinn Peleton last year, and apart from replacing the worn out shimano ultegra shifters it was good to go. |
| Thought about it yes | makalu Jan 24, 2003 7:14 AM | | But decided against it.
I want something brand shiney new. I would personally rathr take a hit on component level, to get something that is all my own from the very start.
Plus, I think a bike is somethign very personable, and don't want someone's leftover :-) |
| WANTING | Berkeley Mike Jan 24, 2003 9:55 AM | | Any machine becomes "yours" when you find its' groove and you become one with it. You are caught up in "wanting" in an ideal sense. Perfectly cool. It limits your choices but you sound like you are willing to "take the hit." Good luck.
Just a tip: roadies don't wear visors and aren't into camelbacks yet. |
| Yep. | Zag Jan 24, 2003 6:04 AM | | When I lived in the city, I found it much easier to find the time to ride the road bike, and so I found it much easier to stay in shape. My weekday road rides could be about fitness, and my weekend mtb rides could be about fun. |
| re: Do you ride the road??? | Jrm Jan 24, 2003 7:53 AM | | This is commuter, skinny dirt rig, and city terrorizer... |
| that bike is all that you mentioned... | kleinrider Jan 24, 2003 12:30 PM | | and then some!!!
Tight!! LX drivetrain?
Looks like some serious fun. Thanks for the looksie. |
| much love for the road | pants Jan 24, 2003 8:19 AM | | It's not the most amazing looking bike but it rides great. Easton Elite aluminium, Ultegra groupset, Dean titanium seatpost, and $2.00 horn.
 |
| but of course, that's all I rode till I got a mtb... | 853 Jan 24, 2003 9:49 AM | | Cadd 5, full Dura-ace, speedplays, ITM millenium kit,CT2 seatpost,SLR saddle, Mavic K's. Sweet,light and fast.
I suggest you get something used you can get almost new bikes with Ultegra cheap. I recently sold a Cadd4 with Ultegra in like new conditions for $900.00 shop around and be patient.
 |
| GT=Love to ride it.... | Jaybo Jan 24, 2003 5:21 PM | | I ride this bike more then my mountain bike because it is so easy: just jump on it and go. This frame is very stiff, which gives me a wonderful feeling of direct connection between the crank and wheels. I really enjoy road biking. |
| Lemond Buenos Aires, sorry no pics. | BrianU Jan 24, 2003 7:39 PM | | I love mountainbiking, but a good roadbike is a beautiful thing. It is nice not having to load the bike in the truck and driving to the trails. I like being able to ride out my driveway after work everyday and never ride the same route twice. It also gives you the opportunity to develop a really smooth spin and this will do wonders for your mountainbiking. |
