On bike specs I've seen reference to FS frames having cartridge bearing bell crank pivots. What the heck is a bell crank? And does anyone know why it's called a bell crank?

Just curious.

...is an 'L' shaped pivot, with the fulcrum at the crook of the 'L', the shock attached to one end and the shockstay/seat stay attached to the other. Not sure if it "has" to be an 'L' or if any short pivot will section will do.

A bell crank is a mechanism that changes the direction of motion or force through 90º (or something close to 90º). It is basically a lever with two arms at right angles with the pivot where the two arms connect. It is called a bell crank because in olden days it was used to operate actual bells, like doorbells.
