| Raceface low rise vs. Easton monkeylite low | Nuget Feb 26, 2003 8:51 AM | | I'm looking for a low riser bar to put on my Jamis Dragon and have narrowed my choices between the Raceface low rise bar($40) and the Easton Monkeylite carbon bar($80). If you have any other suggestions with a rise at 1" or less let me here them.
I've never ridden a carbon bar before so i'm not sure how noticable the damping of the carbon would be over the alloy of the Raceface bar. Is it really that significant?
Also as far as strength goes would they be comparible or would the safer bet be to go with the alloy? I only weigh 135 lbs so there wouldn't be too much stress on the bar. Besides me crashing of course.
thanks for the input everyone |
| I have ridden both and find.... | JAG Feb 26, 2003 8:58 AM | | no real difference when it comes to dampening (tire pressure, fork settings and grip types are way more noticable). The strength was never an issue at my weight (175) so if you want to save about 100 grams I would go with the Easton. At your wt. I think this is the better choice with money not being an issue.

| Raceface | yankeeheel Feb 26, 2003 9:13 AM | | Sorry man but the dollar:gram ratio doesn't work out for me. I'm also willing to bet you can find the RF bar fo less than $40. I've had mine for 3 years on two bikes. Put it in the dirt and trees and it never budges. I've seen Monkeylites implode.
With the Easton you save 55 grams for $40 more. $.72/gram is not my idea of a good investment. |

The RF riser is strong, has a nice stiff feel to it and looks cool. The Easton bar has a bit more swwep than im used to but so far its real comfy. it dampens vibration nicely and the feel is very much aluminum like.
So far thats all i can tell you. I havent ridden so real nasty stuff with the Easton bar yet nor have i had a lot of time with it to discuss its deficiencies. So are you putting alot miles in on the Surly? After seeing yours i was bummed i sold mine and didnt build it as a SS..oh well. |

As for the Surly, I was actually able to get out on it last week. Did my local 7 mile loop while the temps were in the upper 30's. Warm enough I guess. It was much better than spinning on the trainer though that's for sure. But the trainer has done wonders for my pedaling. My average speed is up 2-3 mph from last year. And this has been the only ride outdoors for me this year. Stupid MN.
As for mileage, according to my puter I had around 300 or so miles on it last season. And I didn't even have it the whole year either so not too bad. I was debating putting gears on it but decided against it. For one it looks cool and keeps the weight down, and secondly it's a workout no matter how far I ride or were I ride.
I believe AEbike.com or something has complete Surly's for around $600-$700. Not too shabby
Have a good one |

| I like Answer ProTaper. | rpet Feb 26, 2003 10:24 AM | | the 1" in black is a good price @ Jenson. If you're looking at aluminum bars, it gets my vote.
