| what to do with this bike??!? | tdubjump Feb 26, 2003 8:59 PM | | am in need of help deciding on what to do about a commuter. i have a $4000+ trek elite 9.8 but i don't want to ride that around. i can't decide wether to go single speed or not, what frame would be good, what brakes, fork, etc.
im thinking azonic ds-1 frame single speed with a rigid fork avid mech discs, and dunno what wheels.
want this to be an inexpensive project that is usable. however i am willing to fork out another grand if i have to. (i don't like used parts)
--thankyou

| I've got one of those... | Nate Feb 27, 2003 8:51 AM | | I'm currently running that frame as my XC single speed. I bought it because it was a cheap, versatile frame (you can put gears on it if you want). I had everything else to build the bike when I ordered the frameset and when I got it together, I realized that the frame is designed for a 4-5 inch travel suspension fork. With a standard length rigid fork, the BB sat at about 8" (way too low for off-roading and you can't pedal though any corners on the road). Even "suspension corrected" rigid forks only measure about the same length as an 80mm travel sus fork. So I started looking into custom rigid forks for this frame and realized that would get very expensive. I found this fork at www.webcyclery.com and it works out well. Just be sure to order the 435mm version (same length as 100mm travel sus fork. After that, the bike rides great.
Good luck...

| city bikes that don't suck | ENTREPRENUER Feb 28, 2003 9:10 AM | | The baddest city bikes I've seen i've seen are from Felt Racing. Check out their website feltracing.com. i ride my '92 cannondale with a rigid alum fork and 1" tires on the street.
Don't consider using Azonic frames w/o suspension forks. Disk brakes aren't necessary for streets unless you're hucking stair gaps or live where its super wet and steep all the time. Someone will steal your city bike if it looks too high end, so I'd stay away from anything too flashy. |
