| Bum on a Bontrager... what model is this? | Mikey Feb 26, 2003 8:16 PM | | Near my work in San Francisco, I regularly see a bum, uh, non-domiciled individual, with a Bontrager MTB in a light blue / orange / cream color scheme, with a Judy double-crown fork. What model & year is this bike? Maybe I'll offer him 50 bucks for it.
If anyone here's missing a bike of this description let me know & I can put you "in touch" with the current owner ;-)
Thanks. |
| That would be a..... | Tim in Wi Feb 26, 2003 9:04 PM | | .... Model Year 1999 Bontrager Privateer Comp. I had one once, and loved that bike. Original spec was a SID XC (with black, bontrager-spec crown), RaceLite wheels with KING hubs (the only year of the racelites made with kings), and a good mix of LX to XTR.
Check the wheels, I hear that particular set is still in high demand.
As for a dual crown Judy, I wonder how his headtube is doing! My Bonty died when the headtube ovalized. That was because this was a Trek-built bontrager. Not Santa Cruz built.

The "S" model was the middle of the road Wisconsin built Bontrager. The Privateer was the lowest, the "S" was the middle, and the "Comp" was the highest. |
| Take a closer look... | GregR Feb 27, 2003 4:12 AM | | The Race-lite has several differences:
The head tube of a Race lite frame is relieved on the forward facing side to save a few grams. It's thinner in the center, away from the ends of the tube, but only on the forward facing surface. The ridges are about 0.7mm deep, big enough to see easily. Race frames are not relieved this way.
The other visual difference is a little trickier. Race lite frames use 3/4" chainstays while Race frames use a 7/8" diameter tube, measured near the bottom bracket. The Race lite stays have a round cross section in the region where the tire comes close, the Race frames are formed into a "D" section in this area.

| with that paint scheme | laffeaux Feb 27, 2003 10:12 AM | | It was to be a Privateer. Seat post is 27.0 instead of 26.8, and made from OX-II instead of OX-III. Otherwise should look like a Race frame. |
