| 03 NRS Changes? | Rattlebike Feb 26, 2003 9:52 PM | | My LBS says that the 02 and 03 NRS Air frames are the same, only different colors. They look a little diffrent to me though. The 03 looks like it has a different set-up where the down tube meets the head tube. Anyone know exactly how diffrent they are?? |
| Yep, changes | Rivet Feb 26, 2003 10:16 PM | | The top and down tube no longer have welded gussets, they Hydro-form them now. The gussets are part of the tube, you have to see to understand. |

| Changes? | malcolm Feb 26, 2003 11:59 PM | | The tubes look way better hydroformed as it takes away the welds, and it makes the joint stronger and lighter.
Also they changed the chainstay again to give it even more clearance for the rear dereillier that used to smack.
If you go by last years and this years catalogue they have changed head angle from 71 degrees to 70.5 and the overall lenghth but I wonder if this is true or just a misprint?

| less weight, easier to produce, and stronger. | GregR Feb 27, 2003 4:07 AM | | Obviously the hydroformed tubes have less weight than by adding gussets, it is also easier to produce because there is less welding to do.
As far as strength goes, it probably not quite as strong as a well executed gusset. Gussets take a lot of welding, every weld if not done properly can increase stresses at certain points from distortion and weld shrinking. A poor weld, or gusset design can eliminate any benefit of having a gusset.
Basically with the hydroformed tubes, it is much easier to fabricate a stronger frame than to add gussets to plain tubes. They are stronger than a regular tubeset, but they are not as strong as a properly executed gusset.
