| (X-Post Drivetrain) Can someone help me out with NEXUS 4??? | Scott_in_Jersey Mar 28, 2003 9:14 AM | | This is a cross post from Everything Drivetrain. I have a number of Nexus Inter System wheels set ups (3, 4 & 7 speed) however I don't know much about shifter compatibility. Everything I read from Shimano says these hubs only work with Nexus specific shifters. That's fine, but Shimano doesn't always look outside the box so to speak. I have a Nexus 4 speed coaster brake rear wheel that desperately needs a shifter. I have used the Revo twist shifters, the top push buttom (crap!) and the under bar thumb shifters, and I greatly prefer the thumbie, however I can't find one in the 4 speed variety. What I'd like help with is determining what (if any) other shifter option I have. How about a rear top mount (old Deore style) thumb shifter in index or friction mode? Will a non-indexed (I know Nexus has thier own specific cable pull ratio) friction shifter even work with a Nexus rear hub? I don't see why not, but people tell me "no" more times than not. Has anyone out there ever tried setting up a Nexus rear internal hub with a friction shifter? Thanks for any feedback. - Scott in NJ |
| yes, and no | club Mar 29, 2003 7:04 AM | | yes, anything that pulls on the cable will "work" to activate a Nexus hub and change gears. no, because in between each gear is a neutral space, so if you don't nail the shift just right, you hit neutral, which, depending on the enthusiasm and vigor with which you are riding at the moment, can be a bad thing. and unlike with friction shifting on a freewheel, there is no audio or tactile feedback to let you know when you're getting in between gears. when you're in gear, everything's groovy, move the shifter a nanohair and suddenly you're freewheeling in forward. not saying if you're willing to do the trial and error, you won't find an index shifter with clicks that coincide perfectly with the Nexus hub's requirements. If you got the time and the shifters, go for it and let us know. |
