Different hardtail designBobby_Digital

Hi guys, I was wondering if any companies have ever created a successful "different" hardtail design. Specifically something along the lines of a seat tube with just one other tube acting as both downtube/top tube AND chainstay/seatstay. Basically, an X shape. If not, is it because it would be too weak? I think this would be an interesting shape for a road bike at least, but I'm pretty sure it's been done and rejected. Anyone have pics of prototypes etc?
Well, there's this...woe

...all (if any) merits of the "Y" design aside, they are the ugliest things ever put on this planet!

Ugly boxy thing, as I recall.

KISS - keep it simple & short (or stupid). Ya can't beat the pure simplicity of the twin triangle design. Of course if you're of the "more is better" camp, then check out Ironhorse & GT with their triple triangle designs.

...for a start. You are right that it is not a strong design. All of the above had some additional bracing.
Shiggy, you are truly a treasure trove of nostalgia...$$$

Grove Innovations?? Haven't heard that name since the early 90's although I think they were still around until the mid 90's. Actually even visited their "factory." It was Grove's garage where he had a couple of guys working for him and doing his famous paint jobs (lots of crackle paint and neon back in those days).

Anybody still have a Grove??
I have a GroveSJ_Pro

It actually is at my parents right now, or I'd send a pic. Pretty much just the standard assualt model. Heavy as hell, but what a paint job. It has the universe one. Even had their crank set they made. Funny how 12 years later shimano copies it!!!
I have a Groverangercap

I have a grove too. Don't have any pics. It is actually my third. I had an Assault (great frame color was white with flourescent polka dots all over it "Clown camo") then the headtube had a "failure." Took the frame back to Bill Grove (it was nice that his shop was only 10 miles from my house) and they fixed it up, new paint and all (this one was red/white/blue I dubbed the Capt America frame). It was turned it into an Assault/Aggressor hybrid. OS front triangle, with standard rear triangle. Great bike too. Put a few thousand miles on that one, then there was a weld failure. Got a new Team Frame (True Temper OX3) in 96 and have had it ever since. I still have a few friends who swear by their Groves here in Central PA. Great frames.
