Need Tires: Mutano? Moto? Niether?(13 posts)

Need Tires: Mutano? Moto? Niether?Mummer43
Mar 28, 2003 12:43 PM
I'm looking for new set of tires for my Specialized Enduro Pro. I've been hearing good things about WTB tires and I've narrowed my choices down to the Mutano Raptor or the Moto Raptor.

I ride in Pennsylvania and anyone who's ridden here knows what type of terrain we have... rocky, rooty, muddy and sometimes smooth singltrack. I want a tire that can handle all those conditions and that is big enough to offer good protection against pinch flats. I'm currently riding 2.2's and I want something at least that big.

Can anyone help?

I do
i not
like the Moto in the wet. Too slick.

The Muntano is better. Still not a mud tire but it is OK in the wet.

Others to look at:
* Schwalbe King Jim 2.35
* Hutchinson Mosquito 2.3
* Hutchinson Scorpion Gold Elite 2.3
* Specialized Enduro Pro 2.20
* WTB Weirwolf 2.5
* IRC Backcountry 2.25
* Nokian Gazzaloddi Core 2.3

You can compare sizes on my tire site.

Wierwolf for rear on Spec. Enduro???Mummer43
Mar 28, 2003 1:02 PM
I just read the reviews on the WTB Wierwolf and people have been saying good things about it. My only question is if it will fit on the rear of my Enduro. Has anyone tried this as a rear tire?

BTW, Thanks for the info Shiggy!
You do not have to use the same tire front and rearshiggy

I have only used the Weirwolf on the front. I did not like it on hardpack. Gets high praise most everywhere else.

You might buy three different tires and swap them around to see what you like.
Any suggestions on a rear?Mummer43

What have you used on the rear?
All except the Weirwolfshiggy

The Mosquito and Scorpion were the 2.0 versions
Which rear would YOU use?mummer43

Shiggy, you seem to be pretty knowledgeable when it comes to tires. Which rear tire or setup would you use or have you used in the conditions I mentioned above?

Keep in mind I'm currently running the Spec. Enduro 2.2's front and rear and I'd like something different and/or bigger.

I change tires like most people change their socks. I swap tires for the trail and conditions of the day.

If I had to pick one pair to leave on most of the time It would be two King Jims.

If I could pick three to rotate: King Jim, Motoraptor 2.4 and Enduro Pro 2.20

I disagree on the Mosquito 2.3 for rocky conditions. I have used the tire for a couple years on my snow cat rims for winter riding. The first time I tried it as a summer tire on a rocky trail I got a large casing cut. I think the casing is much too thin for rocky conditions.

Have Some 2.4 Moto's For Low $ If InterestedCCRiderKY

Mummer43 -

Got a good price on a set of 2.4 Moto's online (Supergo I think), and tried them out. Found out I am not a 2.4 kinda' rider. I have a 2002 Enduro, and the tires fit. Snug, but fit nonetheless. I rode them once and took them off. No that they were bad, I just did not like the size for the type of riding I do (agressive trail riding).

Regardless, the tires performed well, I just went back to my 2.1's.

Therefore, I have a set of ridden once 2.4 kevlar Moto's I am trying to sell for $30 for the pair. If you are like me, they are a good price and worth trying. If you ride them and do not like them, you can still turn around and sell.

I"ve been havign good luck with Pana Fire DH Prouber-stupid

They're knobby enough, they're billed as 2.3s, and so far my heavy clydesdale ass hasn't managed to pinchflat em. Which, considering that I've used em around town and on the dirt, says something, becuase I've whopped em against a couple curbstones when my timing was off. And they do pretty well both in dirt and on the road, because the knobs are pretty wide, which might make em a decent mud tire... and long... they're probly 1/2-5/8" square... so they're not so pointy as the Fire XCs are. Haven't tried to put em through the mud yet, but they handle remarkably smoothly on the road, for what they are..

Just my 2 bits though.

your conditions sound similar to mine and recently I have become very fond of the Maxxis Mobster, sticky front, and regular rear. They have a 2.3 single ply that weighs in at around 900g's, also lighter 2.1's and DH's in 2.3, 2.5 and 2.7 that are heavy.

I'm running a DH tacky 2.5 front and a single ply 2.3 rear for basic trail riding and can tolerate any extra weight since the handling is so good.

I've also done a lot of time on motos, mutano, survival pro's, etc. and really thought hard about what I want in a tire before deciding on the mobsters.

My 2c is to go with the MotoRaptor 2.24, the centerline stuff on the Mutano makes them roll a bit easier but I like the grab of the knobs for rocks 'n roots 'n wet stuff more on the Moto.
