I'm planing a trip the first weekend in May. How are the trails? Thanks in advance!

I live in the Grass Valley area and we've been getting alot of rain lately. It may snow the next few days. Probably will snow for sure anywhere above 3500 feet elevation (Downieville area is this high). This time of year things dry out fast when the sun comes out, but I think it will be unlikely to dry up significantly in the next week or so up there. I don't know for sure though because I don't ride there often. It may dry out as fast or even faster than it does around here, but I really doubt it.

First week of May, huh? I don't like your chances. I'd doubt if anything besides the lowest elevation trails will be ridable. There's been an awful lot of April rain and snow this year. It's going to be a late Sierra riding season.
after this storm series, below Downieville should be greatderby

There's plenty of great riding below Downieville too not far away, even in the rain if your dressed right. It should dry up fast after this storm series passes (It's predicted to be passing though Northern Cal on and off through next Monday so far).

Go to the Outside Inn in old town Nevada City for expert recommendations and trail maps in the NC - Downieville - Auburn area. Also check with Coyote Adventures in D or NC.

Bring skis instead ?TruckeeLocal

The skiing is great at the few resorts that remain open. If I remember correctly it's Alpine Meadows, Squaw Valley, and Homewood (?!) after this weekend. Skis travel easier than bikes else it's easier to rent good equipment.

Can't imagine the trails openning up here for another couple of months and no one has contacted me to do any trail maintenance.
