Reccurent Clicking noise?(4 posts)

Reccurent Clicking noise?Marc Jenks

Hi there.

I have owned a Klein Palomino Race Disc (medium) for two months and put a major amount of miles on it. However it has developed a creaking clicking noise that initially seemed to be coming from the Drivetrain. It is there only under pedalling and surprisingly not under heavy pedalling. All gears have the same problem. It is a metallic type noise that I initially suspected was just a loose BB or crank arm. Three different mechanics from a very good bike shop have literally taken the bike apart and cannot find the reason for the noise. It is a very audible sound that is just too irritating to have constantly. I ride every day and put 200k on it a week easily. It is going to go back to the manufacturer later this week and I am going to be bikeless. Which as I am sure you all will agree totally gutting.

Can anyone shed any light on this problem or has anyone experienced similar recurrent noises?

Many thanks for you time

If it's not a slightly loose crankset or bottom bracket (which I've had problems with before) it could be a couple of things. First, look for a stiff link in your chain. This would cause a click when you pedal (even softly) but you would also notice your chain skipping hard on your cassette. Second, it might be your pedals. I built up a bike last summer and hadn't picked up some pedals yet so I rode some old old plastic cheapies I had lying around. My whole bike was whisper quiet but I kept getting this funny clicking noise and found out it was from my pedal bearings. What kind of pedals do you have? If you skimped on them like me and you do as much riding as you say you do they might need a rebuild or replacement. Try that before you send it back to the factory. Good luck.

It could be poorly made or worn threads on your botton bracket. You might try removing the bottom bracket and putting as much teflon tape as you can on the threads and re-installing the BB. Try the thicker yellow teflon tape.

-the seat/seatpost connection. My Thompson seatpost likes to be lubed on all it's surfaces (including the part that inserts into the frame, of course) except for the saddle rail area. or just a creaky cheap seat.
-pedals
-chainrings
-headset/stem interface surface.
