I'll try this again. The previous post said Trek 8900. The frame is actually a Trek 8700.

I have the opportunity to purchase a NEW 1991 Trek 8700 Carbon & aluminum MTB frame. It looks great, has the right geometry, weight, and price. I was wondering what the history has been with this frame and if there were problems with the carbon tubes.

Is this frame similar to road frames of the same vintage? Where there problems with them?

I beleive they used the same frame for the two models, with component spec being the big difference. As far as I know, these frames held up very well. there was a recall of the aluminum lugged carbon road frames around that time (I think it was actually 92 or 93 though) because of a glue problem, but it was only a limited # of frames.

The main issues that I potentially see with this frame are fork related as it is pre suspension and I beleive a 1" steerer, so a suspension for will slaken the head tube and your options are limited in that respect. one minor issue is the fact that it doesnt have a replaceable derailler hanger, so if you smoke the hanger you will be sol. If you were planning to use a rigid fork go for it
