| 2.1 Scorpion rubbing on my NRS Air. | Npc2396 Apr 25, 2003 4:05 AM | | Does anyone have trouble running Hutchinson 2.1 Scorpion tubeless tires on their Giant NRS? When I lean into a fast turn the tire hits something on my frame and continues even after the bike has been straitend out. If the speeds are high enough it doesn't even need to be in a turn to start buzzing. I can't find where it's hitting but it's diffently coming from the rear. I'm running about 40psi. |

A rubbing tire can easily eat away material on an aluminum frame, which, if bad enough, can lead to frame failure. And failure like that will generally not be covered under warranty as it's not considered a "frame defect" - unless perhaps the Scorpions are the stock tires. In which case get your bike to the LBS ASAP and have them check it out. |
| Bzzzzt Wrong! But thanks for playing... | DeeEight Apr 25, 2003 2:26 PM | | rubber tires rubbing will remove PAINT from a frame, but it won't remove metal. The aluminium is harder than the rubber. If anything you're more likely to slice the sidewall/casing on the tire if its rubbing on the frame. |

| re: 2.1 Scorpion rubbing on my NRS Air. | jaco Apr 25, 2003 5:43 AM | | i had a giant nrs 1 2001 that i recently sent back for replacement. i bought the frame and installed panaracer 2.1's and they rubbed the paint and then started eating away at the aluminium on the left chainstay. as far as i could tell the frame was misaligned from the start.
in any case, i got a brand new 2002 replacement frame. |

1. I clipped the little fingers that come off the knob's
small finger nail clippers worked great
2. wrap your stay with a lizard skin or a old tube because the rubbing will eat the paint off fast.
Since i have done these two simple things the only time they rub is when i'm standing and hammering pretty hard. I hope this helps you.
Oh yeah i run my scorpions at 35-40 psi. |
| say what? | ergo 1600 Apr 25, 2003 11:15 AM | | I run 2.35 tires on my NRS with no rubbing.
Something is wrong with your frame or your wheels. |
| Actually more a case of your 2.35s AREN'T really 2.35s... | DeeEight Apr 25, 2003 2:23 PM | | Hutchinson tires more often than not are larger that claimed size, because they base the claim on the casing width, not the tread width. So tire models where the tread sticks out are in reality much wider than rated. The Jumbo's were rated 2.4 but in reality more of a 2.65, the Scorpion Elite 2.0s are 2.2s and the 2.3s are a bit over 2.4 in real width.
Meanwhile many brands like Kenda, IRC, and Maxxis for example are 10-20% under listed size. I had some IRC Back Country 2.25s and they were barely 2 inches wide. Maxxis HighRoller 2.35s are really 2.2s. |
| You can see the real numbers here... | shiggy Apr 25, 2003 3:21 PM | | shiggy's Mt. Bike Tire Site
The tread of a Scorpion Air Light 2.0 is 56.1mm wide (2.20") (there is no 2.1 version - just 1.75, 2.00 and 2.3). The Elite Gold 2.3 is 61.2mm/2.41".
A Conti Vertical Pro 2.3 is 55.6/2.19".
Klein Deathgrip 2.35: 50.7/2.00" (the casing is wider at 53.5/2.11) |
| re: 2.1 Scorpion rubbing on my NRS Air. | GlowBoy Apr 25, 2003 12:22 PM | | Hutchinson tires are larger for their stated size than most other brands. It's not that they're bigger than the stated 2.1, it's that they're actually 2.1 and most brands overstate the true size of their tires. A Hutchinson 2.1 is better than a Conti or IRC 2.3, but they're all around ACTUAL 2.1 inches. Check to make sure the wheel's mounted straight in the dropouts (most people with vertical drops never check this, but some dropouts still have some play in them) and make sure you don't just have a real flexy rear wheel.
And make sure actually IS rubbing the frame, which you'll know from missing paint. Certain tires, especially more aggressively knobbed ones, will make a buzzing sound on the ground that you'd swear sounds like tire on chainstay, except it isn't. Conti Survivals, for example, are notorious for this. |
| I had a 2.0 do it on my NRS | Trevor! Apr 25, 2003 1:21 PM | | Yep I noticed some paint has been removed and the alu has literally been polished and thats been with a 2.0 Hutchinson Scorpion!
They are very large volume tyres and a 2.1 would be closed to 2.25 because of the side knobs |
| re: 2.1 Scorpion rubbing on my NRS Air. | jaco Apr 26, 2003 4:16 AM | | everybody here's trying to be helpfull, i know by trying to put aside the fact that other people have had problems with tires rubbing the hell out of their nrs chainstay. Its not aggessive treads making noise, its not like rubber cant eat away aluminium, and why should anybody have to clip the knobs off their tires? its more like it has actually been going on and in cases it means frame misalignment. believe it or not, at some point, the polished aluminum will start showing some kind of fissure. |
