Poll: How many people here smoke cigarettes?BH
Apr 25, 2003 6:22 AM
I don't and I would seem to think that a very very small number of people who frequent a website dedicated to mountain biking would smoke or even consider smoking cigarettes. Its nice to see MTBR.com selling advertising but isn't an anti tobacco pop up add simply preaching to the choir?
Nope, not tabacco. Can't stand it. (nm)kleinrider

And about your point about the Anti-smoking ads - Ad revenue is ad revenue, and if they want to advertise on this site, MTBR.com's going to take their money regardless.

It's the stupid marketing manager that's wasting his/her advertising budget on people that do not smoke. They obviously did not research their target audience very well.

Started tobacco at 17, quit at 20. Quit smoking Big Brand tobacco when I was 18, rolled my own unfiltered until the day--errr, week actually--I got bronchitis and had to stay in bed for 5 days coughing up blood and not eating. Yummy! Only good thing was, when I came out of it, I knew I was done (sorta). Since then, I've had maybe 2 drags of other people's cigarettes, and not only was I drunk, but those drags made me sick. No more tobacco for me:)
Nasty and dangerous habit...woodyak

Some friends of mine just had their condo burn down. The cause was a cig was put out an old flower pot that had dried out peat moss in it. Of course she claims she gave up smoking but the fire inspector found old butts on the ground and they live on the 3rd floor, so no one else had access to the deck.
I wish i was told of the evils of smoking when i was 13Jrm

Then maybe i wouldnt have started in the 1st place. IMO (yup like all a$sholes): The ads are targeting kids..younger than 18, not the 18 to 24 yr old that MTB ads seem to target.
What the hell is wrong with having a smoke?Philber
Apr 25, 2003 7:27 AM
I smoke a butt every once in a while. Or, heaven forbid, a joint. Or drink a beer. Or have a scotch. Sure, smoking half a pack of cigarettes a day (or even a fraction of that) is gonna kill ya, but there's nothing wrong with having a cigarette or two when you're out on a Saturday night shooting pool. Or smoking a cigar while walking along a golf course. Heck, I figure you get more crap in your lungs sitting in a traffic jam or driving around an underground parking lot than you do smoking one cigarette.

Lighten up folks. Everything in moderation, even cigarettes.
p.s. Kids, if you're reading this, I'm just jokingPhilber

I don't agree with kids being able to smoke, at all, because they're not old enough to make intelligent decisions on things like smoking. And they don't really understand that some people, once they start, are unable to stop. But adults know this stuff, so if they choose to partake, so be it.

As luck would have it I manage the ads for a large internet site. These ads are problably not a paid ad. When you set up an ad network you have the option of using public service announcments to fill in your unsold inventory. You don't get paid for it unfortunately.

There is a small chance that the ads were purchased but it is unlikely.

As an aside I am a smoker that hasn't been able to quit yet but I keep trying, it isn't easy after 20 years of it. The only smoke free time I have is on the trails, I don't smoke on the way to, during or on the way home from riding. I know it slows me down so I will just keep trying.

Used to smoke about a pack a day for about 20 years, recently quit. Nastiest habit there is, wish I would have quit long ago, but live and learn. Feel much better now...

I smoked 2 packs a day for 16 years. I finally quit a little over 2 years ago. It was the hardest and best thing i've ever done.

That's how I found out I really wanted my girlfriend to be my wife - I quit, unsolicited, just so she wouldn't have to breathe my spew. I was pack-a-day for ~10 years prior to that.

I'll still indulge in a cigar once in a blue moon, after a beer or five...

Started at 13 or 14 and finally quit at 27. That was last August. I tried to quit and failed 4 or 5 times before I actually did it. It's a terrible addiction. I think philber right about it being ok to have a butt every once in a while, but for people like me (who were seriously addicted) it's a bad idea. I tried that when I quit a few years ago, and within 2 years I was back up to nearly a pack a day.
Yeah, it's weird, eh?Philber

I've been smoking a half a pack a month for years and years. My sister, on the other hand, has tried to quit over and over and just can't do it. They say that some people are more genetically predisposed to certain addictions than others. Certainly that appears to be the case with alcoholism. But I can smoke a couple of butts one day and then not even think about smoking for a month. I have to keep my smokes in a zip-loc baggie, otherwise they go stale long before I get to smokin 'em. (In particular, I like to have a butt while I adjust my drivetrain.)

I know it isn't just a case of people not wanting to quit. I know lots of people who want to quit more than anything, but they can't do it. With me, it's wanting to lose that extra 10 pounds. I know I'll never do it if I don't stop eating Burnt Almond bars, pistachio nuts and Miss Vickie's Jalapeno chips, but do you think I can stop eating that crap? Nope. Maybe if I were to smoke more ... (okay, just kidding.)
Thank you for using the right word. . .Mowerman

I'm sick of people who go around saying that 'smoking
is a bad HABIT.'
It's not a habit, it's an ADDICTION.
Nicotene is extremely addictive, I smoked for 6 years and
thankfully was finally able to quit. It was extremely difficult
because it was so ADDICTIVE.
A bad habit is chewing with your mouth open, or picking your nose
and eating it, etc.
I did it Cold Turkey, which was tough, but works. Now, whenever I am
around someone smoking cigarettes, I wanna puke.
no, but luv me sum tomaccokham

Crap, I've gone all day without thinking about it, and now you bring it up :)
Actually, I've got 8 weeks on the wagon, and yes, it's getting easier. Can't say that I'll never have one again, but for now, I'm a quitter.
I wish I was the type who could have one every weekend or so, but I've proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that I'm not.
Bad news: I'm now eating like it's a contest.
Good news: I'm now biking like it's a contest.

Smoked 1/2 a pack for 2 years in college. I basically quit riding then as well cause I was working so much. There's something about working in restaurants and smoking.

Now I only smoke if I'm drinking with a friend who smokes. I end up smoking 2-4 a given night about twice a month. I kick myself every morning after, but I enjoyed it the night before. I don't even think about it if no one else is smoking.

fattire--

I'm in the same boat. Started smoking only while drinking, (over ten yrs ago), then that progressed to smoking a couple a day. In the last month, I've limited it to a couple a week. But I also haven't been out drinking in a while......

and as a result, before I quit last year, I hadn't smoked inside my own house for years. Just so used to going outside. Of course we don't have the winters that new york has.
