| Which UST tires for a Heckler???? | Fast Freddy Apr 25, 2003 10:49 AM | | Getting new tubeless wheels for my 03 Heckler - Which UST tires would everyone recommend for trail use? No extreme downhilling - or strictly XC - a good Trail tire? (I'm running a Z1 FR on the front - so it has to fit in there!)
Thanks in Advance!

| re: Which UST tires for a Heckler???? | Jrm Apr 25, 2003 11:13 AM | | I too thought about either using Stans or UST tires on mine too. But my reasoning on this was that if i buy into UST technology (ie rims and tires) then im kinda stuck with um.
If it was me i'd go with stans. My reasoning is that i dont have to make the investment in UST specific rims or limited # of tires offered in UST. Instead id use stans then be able to change what tires i wanted to use given where i was riding. Then slowly i cold buy UST rims if i wanted to. |
| re: Which UST tires for a Heckler???? | Fast Freddy Apr 25, 2003 11:32 AM | | That's actually what I did. I'm building new set of King Iso on Mavic X3.1's now replacing my King ISO on 317's that I've been using Stan's with....
I was ready to make the tubeless jump. Just wondered what tires everyone was using. I don't miss the pinch flats a bit - that was my biggest reason to swaping over to UST.
Thanks

| A few ideas: | Trevor! Apr 25, 2003 5:43 PM | | I am a BIG fan of Hutchinson USTs, I frankly think they are the best.
* UST pythons rock in the dry/rocky/sandy/hardpacked terrain
* UST scorpions good for very nasty wet/mud conditions or throw a 2.0/2.3 in your front with a UST python and your set. Very beefy tyre indeed
Reason why I like the Hutchinsons is the feel they have, they are beefy tyres, almost like a DH tyre with the rubber thickness, so you can run em however you like and they just stick to the train and soak up big hits indeed! Like an additional inch - not that your heckler will be needing that :')
Try some airlights too with stans if you want too.
Other USTs, Seracs XC, FireXCs but a little heavy
Actually if you are in dryish coditions give the Scorpion up front/Python in back a go. I find it a good combo, the Scorpion has a very directional profile to it IMHO! |
| Thanks! Actually..... | Fast Freddy Apr 25, 2003 8:10 PM | | I've been running the Hutchinson Scorpion 2.0's on there and hadn't had ANY problems. I've only got a few rides in on them but so far they are great! Maybe I should just get a bigger set for the new UST wheels! As big as I can get for the Fork (Z1 FR - 2003). Should I get a matching size for the rear or smaller?
Thanks

| well....... | Trevor! Apr 25, 2003 8:55 PM | | I cant stand running one in the back if it isnt nasty wet and muddy. I only gave them a few goes both front and rear and they freaked me out a little. They were fine if the everything was wet, otherwise eek! Not great! Tho as I say I didnt give them long enough. If it is dry I just pop a python in the back and it rawks!
I rekon in a Z1 you should be able to fit the big fat 2.3 in the front. In the back I dont know? If you are doing freeridish stuff I guess you want bigger so 2.0 may be thee way to go.
You will notice a little resistance with them to, like a vibration almost but thats thanks to the side knobs!
I am giving them both a chance again. I will give them a shot next monday when my cast comes of my leg till then, I am locked inside.
What conditions you ride? Apparently a Scorpion up front with a Mosquito up back is super cool??? Dont know!
The pic below shows a 2.0 gold Elite version with a black fork which has reasonable clearance. Dont think the 2.3 would fit?
OT: What does your rig weigh? |
| well....... | Fast Freddy Apr 26, 2003 9:58 AM | | I was running the Scorpion UST (on X317 w/ Stans) on my 03 Heckler and liked them - but I just got new UST rims for the Heckler and The fork claims 2.4's and the rear will take up to a 2.5". I live in Ohio and we seem to always be wet and sticky muddy until after July. My old NRS1 had the Pythons on it and they were great and fast in the dry. I ran the Mosquitos up until last fall and they seemed to do well even in the mud and dry. The thing I like about the Scorpions is that they have pretty much rolled (and stuck) to trail regardless of conditions or up or down. Maybe I'll just get a pair of 2.3 Scorpion UST's.
The Heckler weighs in at a tad over 30 lbs
My 02 Rainier Singlespeed is 24 lbs
(my old NRS weighed in at 24.5lbs - it's on light-bikes site).
Thanks - Later!

| Nokian NBX | Dave_from_Derry Apr 26, 2003 11:35 AM | | I use these on my Blur and a buddy uses them on his Heckler. We both have 2.1s in the rear and 2.3s in he front. Best UST I've used so far. Hooks up well when wet or dry, in mud or on rock. Stable, consistent cornering, holds air well. |
