Wet roots/mud tire?Garick

I'm looking for a tire that will perform well on muddy singletrack with lots of wet roots and off camber turns. Based on the reviews the hutchinson alligator gold sounds good. How about a mud-specific tire? Right now I'm running trailblasters which I think do really bad in these conditions.
Perhaps a Scorpion. Alligator comes only in std version now (nm)Trevor!

I've run Alligators for a year and a half now, including two Pacific Northwest winters. They are awesome in mud, especially as a rear tire, where the the grip is unbelievable. And when they do start to let go, it's gradual and predictable - you can feel it start to spin and have enough time to back off the power and stay on the bike. They're excellent on wet roots and rocks, too. They also roll pretty good in dry conditions and make a decent all-rounder. I am 175 lb. and get away with running them 25 psi F / 35 R, and have yet to pinch flat them. Only weak spot is as a front tire in loose dry conditions (sand or gravel), where they can wash out a little too easily.

I've run the 2.0 in both the black and Gold versions and haven't been table to tell any difference - and the black ones are 100g lighter than the Gold. Save some money and weight, and get the black ones at Pricepoint.com for $17.

Be aware that Hutchinsons run pretty close to their stated size, so a 2.0 will be the same size as a "2.2" to "2.3" from, say IRC or Continental. In other words, fat and cushy. I've ridden the 1.85 'Gator too, although for only one ride, and it seemed to work about the same.

I would also add that the Golds (haven't tried the blacks) are an excellent snow tire. This review is bang on my experience. I'm running the Golds and loving 'em. When it dries up, I'll switch to my Panaracer Fire XC Pro 2.1's. I noticed in a LBS the other day that Panaracer makes a mud tire - if the Fire XC's are any indication, it's probably a very good tire.

...the Schwalbe Black Shark Mud 2.1. Very much a mud tire with tall knobs and hard rubber it also does well on roots for some reason.

I agree, the Hutchinson Alligator Gold 2.0" is so far the best wet roots/mud/snow tire I have ever tried. I have used it for riding in the worst conditions, wet roots/rocks, mud and dark(headlamp riding is a real adrenaline kick!!) at the same time - the grip is excellent and good mud shedding.
