CHAFING......(10 posts)

CHAFING......Ichibon
May 20, 2003 6:27 PM
I have some serious chafing going on in my "nether" region and was wondering if anyone has any proven cures/remedies? I rode today and just irritated it more. I know rest is probably the best thing, but its racing season and I cannot afford much time off the bike.

Cornstarch -- Results guaranteed!Chomp

Normal grocery store corn starch. I think it is the #1 ingredient in baby powder...anyhow...it is absolutely great...a good dousing on your butt and boys before a ride will do ya. Give it a shot...you won't ever use anything else again.
Recycle it in your favorite recipe after the ride. nmslowpokeSS

I've found that it helps to get some air down there at night. Try sleeping in nothing or at least very loose fitting boxers. Maybe even wrong-side out so the seam doesn't rub against you. When I'm having trouble and try this I usually wake up in a little better shape than when I went to bed.

Try using noxema (sp) cream on the affected areas after it heals up. Works great at stopping that from happening.

Walmart Pharmacy section has this cream called Udderly smooth same deal as Buttrr. I use to get chafed and saddle sores, now since I use that for every ride its the thing of the past. But if you have saddle sores starting use Preparation H on them it will help shrink the swelling down use it before and after the ride apply before going to bed also.

I personally have never had the problem but, a friend has. He calls it baboon butt and uses bag balm if he's doin a big ride.
No underwear, good shorts, Chamois Butt'rGlowBoy

First of all, if you're wearing underwear under your bike shorts STOP IT RIGHT NOW. That is guaranteed chafing.

Second, good 8-panel shorts are essential. Costs some money, but your ass is worth it.

Third, check your saddle fit. Make sure it isn't too high or low, too far forward or back, or at the wrong angle.

I rarely have chafing problems after following the above, except on very long rides. Then Chamois Butt'R is a godsend. It comes in a big tube for about $10, or in little single-use tubes for a buck - I keep one of these in my pack just in case I might need it. On epic rides you may have to reapply it mid-ride. I do not put anything greasy on my butt unless I believe I will experience chafing on the ride, and you will see the reasons why below.

A lot of people swear by Bag Balm, and it is nice because it is thick and stays on all day. But I used it every day on a weeklong bike trip a couple years ago and promptly came down with saddle sores - not to be confused with mere chafing, this is a subcutaneous staph infection (aka "hospital infection") on your posterior. Really something you don't want. I haven't used Bag Balm since. It's so thick and greasy that it stays there and traps naturally occurring bacteria against your sweaty skin, promoting infection.
