Looking at my bike last night (Specialized FSR XC) and I got to thinking...WHAT TYPE OF LUBRICANT SHOULD I BE USING ON MY BIKE?

Not talking brand, but lube in general. An example would be...I use triflo on almost everything. Would I be better off using grease and other lubes for specific parts. I got my chain lube down after trying a few kinds, but brakes, drive components, cables, etc.

Tried to search this with no luck so your info would be of great assistance.

Thank You,
Jason Kehaya

PS-Any good bike tuning links other than Park tools?
OK, gotta ask. What lube do you use on your brakes???bhutata

The kind of lube really just depends on what you're lubing. Light oil for things like cables, bike grease for hubs, etc. There's a bunch of options and I doubt that anything made specifically for the job is all that bad. The biggest debate is over chain lube, but the biggest deal is to keep up with it on a regular basis.

Ask your LBS what they stock and use on their own bikes.

If you are asking me, I use a light teflon spray for the pivots and levers and they wipe the excess off. Can't remember the brand but I will have the can in front of me in 15 minutes...

Let me ask the question in another form...When would you use grease on a MTB?

Use grease inside bearings that spin and take load, which you will need to take apart to get at. Hubs, pedals, headsets. Plus suspension fork bushings (again, inside) and rear shock bushings, but these generally use specialized greases, not bearing grease. These "overhauls" are usually only needed rarely (like one a year, or longer, for hubs & headsets), twice a year for forks. Depending on your use. Also on bolt threads whenever you reassemble something, bottom bracket splines if you replace a crankset, on your seatpost where it's inside the frame. Basically grease should only be used inside parts, because externally it will attract dirt.

Use oil on things you can reach that move - chain, derailleurs pivots, brake pivots, outer lip of suspension forks & rear shocks, some people oil their cables, others say they're better dry.
