| Attn San Diego/SoCal riders | SpinnerRx May 21, 2003 10:00 AM | | Can anyone suggest a bike-friendly road route from the downtown/Gaslamp section of town to Mission Trails park? I'm gonna be in town a few days and hoping to rent a bike, head to the park for some hiking/biking/climbing. Any suggestions on novice-intermediate trails to check out while I'm at the park? Thanks all! |

You'll need to find a good map to guide you but the basic route would be Pacific Hwy (not PCH) out of downtown heading north. When you get near the interchange for the 5 and 8 freeways you will look for Friars Road which will then take you east towards San Diego State Univ. Once you get near the 8 and 15 freeway exchange (this is where you will need a good map) you'll need to get over to Mission Gorge Road which will eventually take you to Mission Trails.
The trails at Mission Trials can be fun but lots of them are either up or down. Very little flat riding at the park. If your into a hell climb, get a park map from the Visitor's Center and climb up to the saddle and then up from there to North Fortuna Peak. Great views and some fun but short technical singletrack off of the backside of the peak. |

What kind of distance is the route you suggested? Call me a wimp, but I've given up trying to commute to the trails on fat tires. |
| not tooo far if.... | noslogan May 21, 2003 3:05 PM | | you do ride a plenty. My guess is 20 miles max. 4 or 5 miles from Gaslamp to Friars. 7 or 8 miles to the end of Friars. 4 or 5 miles on Mission Gorge Rd (left) to Jackson. One entrance across from Jackson and another 150 yards up Mission G.
Hold on, not sure, but you might be able to get a one day pass for your bike on the trolly. It gets better than 3/4 of the way there.
find the Mission Valley line and go to the end. |
