Play in my rear hub!!!(7 posts)

Play in my rear hub!!!Sizzla
May 21, 2003 1:20 PM
Finally finished finals yesterday and managed to get in a ride yesterday and today. While on todays ride I quickly noticed that my wheel could be easily pushed from side to side, not a huge amount but enough to be very noticeable. Not sure when it happened except i didn't notice it yesterday. The movement is occuring in the hub as the cassette is moving too. I have a Fuel 90 disc with bontrager race disk wheels and hubs. I've crashed it a few times and definetly ride it a bit rougher than a racer, but nothing beyond your average trail. Anyways, I'm thinking that i've buggered the hub and am gonna need something new... but if there were any alternatives, suggestions would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Sizzla

Mine is moving side to side about 5mm. I think it is messing up my shifting as well as I can't tune the gears properly.

My rear hub is a no name hub that came with my bike (Giant NRS). I think it may be Formula. Anyway it is lousy quality as I opened it up and it has no rubber seals to properly keep water out. My bearings were shot. THey are the sealed cartridge type.
LBS don't stock them so I need to chase up a bearing outlet. I think instead I'll buy a whole new wheel and hub with proper seals to prevent same thing happening again.

Good luck with the repairs... If you do open them up check the bearings, if they are sealed catrdige type check them for play. Grease it all up before you put it back together.
Nope don't GREASE your hub internalsJimC.

use a light oil, otherwise the pawls won't work and render the hub useless.

Park's site has all the detials. Jim
I use Spin Doctor grease all the time for the hub bodies...neverEbo

ever had a problem with the pawls. Now say I lived and rode in extreme cold temps, then I might use something like Morningstar free hub oil. Just my 2 cents.
