What straps to use for holding bike onto trunk rack?GirchyGirchy

After bugging the hell out of my dad for the past three months, he finally got around to finding the installation parts for my parents' old bike rack. It's a Sears model from '73 or so, and is in perfect shape because, well, it's never been used.

It's more of a 'bumper' rack than a trunk one. Metal brackets wrap around the bumper and screw into the rack's legs, and two rubber-dipped pegs poke out at the top of them to hold the two bikes. It also has straps that reach to the trunklid for extra stabilization.

I'm just wondering what to use to tie the bike to the pegs. They don't have retaining clips like newer ones, but the rack does have a couple of strange loose straps I don't quite trust. So I'm looking for some easily-detatched straps, preferably made of a nylon mesh or similar material, to keep the bike from flying off of the rack. Anybody have some creative suggestions?

Thanks in advance for any help!

The straps on my bones rack are worn out. I went to the lbs and they gave me a handful of toe straps (the ones used with toeclips). Works great.

They won't work to secure the downtube, and I use a small bungee chord there.

Works like a champ.
Yup, toe straps work great nt.Philber
