| re: Anodizing or Powder Coating?? Pros/Cons of each? | wayneosdias Jun 17, 2003 5:08 PM | | id like to know to, i looked into it about a year ago and found that ano can be difficult, much more costly and wont work on all AL materials. if you do a search under google for diy anodizing theres companies that sell diy, the problem is the proccess req's a large vat to contain the medium and a large electrical source to depolarize the AL. This is of course after youve stripped and polished the frame. All in all the ano will cost at least $300 if it will work for you frame vs $120 for powdercoating.
anybody add anything?

| I'd like to know what happened with Giant's "Air" frames... | næstep Jun 17, 2003 5:28 PM | | Back in 2001 when I bought my NRS, I remember the NRS Air and maybe the XTC Team (???) being anodized instead of painted, to save a few grams off the frame weight (I assume it gave the frame a pretty unique look, too, but I never saw one in person).
But then I remember some posts attributing some malady to anodized frames. Frame squeeks? Weld failures? Pivot slop? I don't remember exactly, it just problem that seemed pretty unlikely.
What gives? Am I remembering this correctly?

| ano and failures | wayneosdias Jun 17, 2003 7:40 PM | | you definatley will not find ano on budget off shelf bikes, only on hi digit frames like intense and SC. You may want to try contacting them and asking why they go to the pains and cost of anodizing these supposed hand crafted frames. I bet you wont herar them saying "cuz it looks bitchen" but rather its a harder more durable finish. As for effecting the integrity of the material and joints thats a good Q and might have something to do w/the type of AL that can be anodized.
ultimatley if you looking to put a fresh face on you work horse for mtbing in the real world, take it to a good powder coater and get a faux ano finish for a little over a C-note.

| some info on anodizing | Yeti_Rider Jun 17, 2003 7:57 PM | | http://www.focuser.com/atm/anodize/anodize99.html

in a nutshell, anodizing is a surface treatment while powder coating is a surface finish or covering. Each process requires equipment large enough to accomodate the type of part being finished, but there are many more steps to anodizing than powdercoating. Each will chip or scratch but anodizing is more durable than powdercoating which is more durable than painting. Powder coating is also relatively soft so even if the finish doesn't allow scratched down to metal, it will show surface scratches (My powder coated Yeti ARC frame is covered with surface scratches which just make the finish look dull up close but don't really bother me much) |
| Anodizing is lighter | pixelninja Jun 18, 2003 7:06 AM | | I just bought a new wheelset from http://www.oddsandendos.com and the rims are anodized. Based on the info from this page, http://oddsandendos.safeshopper.com/17/70.htm?5 , I saved 15g per rim over powdercoated rims. If you can save 15g on a rim, imagine how much weight you can save on an entire frame. |
